An image forming apparatus includes an operation unit that receives an instruction for an operation and executes the operation, and an instruction unit that outputs the instruction to the operation unit. The operation unit includes a configuration storage unit that stores deployment configuration of one or more image forming apparatuses, and an instruction acceptance unit that accepts an instruction for an operation corresponding to the deployment configuration. The instruction unit includes an instruction output unit that receives a designation of an operation, and outputs an instruction for the designated operation to the operation unit, and a configuration reporting unit that, if the designated operation does not correspond to a first deployment configuration stored in the configuration storage unit, reports to the operation unit a second deployment configuration to which the designated operation corresponds, and stores the second deployment configuration in the configuration storage unit, before the instruction is output.

Based on both logical information and layout information capable of discriminating a fixed portion of print data from a variable portion of the print data in a process operation of a first page of a printing matter, a printing control system separates the variable portion of the print data from the fixed portion of the print data, and preliminarily registers the print data of the fixed portion into a storage apparatus provided on a printing apparatus. While a process operation for a second page of the printing matter and a process operation for a fixed portion having the same format, to which a printing process operation has been once carried out, are not repeatedly carried out, since only the variable portion of the print data is transmitted to the printing apparatus, both data transfer time for the printing apparatus and printing process time can be shortened.

It is intended to provide a composite machine-server system which can handle electronic documents more efficiently and can be realized at a low cost. A composite machine-server system is constructed by connecting a plurality of composite machines and a server to a network. Each of the composite machines has a second-kind process function of executing a second-kind process without cooperating with the server when requested to execute the second-kind process, as well as a first-kind process function of sending, when requested to execute a first-kind process, an electronic document necessary for execution of the first-kind process to the server and requesting the server to execute the first-kind process on the electronic document. The server has a function of executing first-kind processes whose execution is requested by the composite machines.

A high-speed network printer apparatus which can be used in common by clients having different communication protocols and which can sort out printing jobs into the order of clients. Printing information is supplied from a client which may be a personal computer or a work station through a connector of the printer apparatus. A LAN interface driver receives the printing information and identifies a communication protocol by which the printing information is transferred. A communication protocol controller receives printing information in accordance with a predetermined protocol. A spooling controller, which is coupled to a storage unit which stores the received printing information, creates a queue for printing jobs. A printer controller reads out from the storage unit the printing information corresponding to a printing job of the highest priority which is designated by the queue, and forms a dot image on the basis of the printing information. A printing mechanism prints the image on paper. A mailbox stores printed paper into a designated bin. A printing job table is provided in the printer apparatus, in which each row is allotted to one printing job which includes a field for storing an emulation program name. A registering unit judges whether or not there is a another printing job having the same emulation program name to expedite the printing process.

A character resource utilizing system for preparing print data from an extracted character resource and printing characters. The character resource utilizing system includes a memory for storing a first type of character resources and a second type of character resources, a print data processing unit for reading a desired character resource from the memory and preparing print data, a printing mechanism for printing the print data, and a processing unit for performing a charging process in accordance with the use of the second type of character resources read from the memory. Another character resource utilizing system comprises a character resource managing apparatus for storing at least a second type of character resources and transferring the second type of character resources in response to a character resource request, and a printing apparatus including the aforementioned memory, print data processing unit, printing mechanism and processing unit. This design will permit other character resources than standard character resources to be properly evaluated, thereby contributing to the promotion of the development of character resources.
