A new electrical insulating oil composition having improved low temperature characteristics which composition comprises a mixture of 40% by weight or more of benzyltoluene and the remainder of alkyl substituted diphenylmethane having 15 to 17 carbon atoms which is represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl groups and the total number of carbon atoms in R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 is 1 to 4, except that R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are simultaneously methyl groups; and the proportion of the total quantity of solid phase calculated according to the following general solid-liquid equilibrium equation is 45% by weight or less relative to the total quantity of said composition at -40.degree. C.: ##EQU1## wherein X.sub.i is the equilibrium mole fraction of a component i, in the liquid phase, .DELTA.H.sub.i.sup.f is the heat of fusion (cal.mol.sup.-1), T.sub.i.sup.f is the melting point (K), T is the temperature (K) of the system, and R is the gas constant (cal.mol.sup.-1.K.sup.-1). Electrical capacitors prepared with these electrical insulating oil compositions provide excellent operation at temperatures as low as -40.degree. C., preferably as low as -50.degree. C.

Electrical insulating oil composition and capacitors prepared therewith

Method of producing insulating oil comprising dibenzylbenzene

An electrical insulating oil composition which comprises 45% by weight or more of at least 2 members selected from the group consisting of (a) m-ethylbiphenyl, (b) p-ethylbiphenyl, (c) o-benzyltoluene, (d) m-benzyltoluene, (e) p-benzyltoluene, and (f) 1,1-diphenylethane; and the remainder of non-condensed bicycle aromatic hydrocarbons having not more than 17 carbon atoms besides the above 6 components; and is characterized in that, when the temperature of the composition is -40.degree. C., (I) the total quantity of solid phase obtained by calculating according to the following solid-liquid equilibrium equation is 45% by weight or less relative to the total quantity of the composition, and (II) in the liquid phase composition calculated by the following solid-liquid equilibrium equation, the total quantity of the compounds (a) to (f) is 40% by weight or more and the viscosity of this liquid phase is 500 cSt or lower, ##EQU1## wherein X.sub.i is the equilibrium mole fraction of a component i in the liquid phase; .DELTA.H.sub.i.sup.f is a heat of fusion (cal.mol.sup.-1); T.sub.i.sup.f is a melting point (K); T is the temperature (K); and R is the gas constant (cal.mol.sup.-1.K.sup.-1). An electrical insulating oil composition having good low temperature characteristics which comprises at least 4 members selected from the group consisting of (a) m-ethylbiphenyl, (b) p-ethylbiphenyl, (c) o-benzyltoluene, (d) m-benzyltoluene, (e) p-benzyltoluene, (f) 1,1-diphenylethane, and (g) 1,1-diphenylethylene; and is characterized in that the proportion of solid phase at a temperature of -40.degree. An electrical insulating oil composition having good low temperature characteristics which comprises at least 4 members selected from the group consisting of (a) m-ethylbiphenyl, (b) p-ethylbiphenyl, (c) o-benzyltoluene, (d) m-benzyltoluene, (e) p-benzyltoluene, (f) 1,1-diphenylethane, and (g) 1,1-diphenylethylene; and is characterized in that the proportion of solid phase at a temperature of -40.degree. An electrical insulating oil mainly comprising a fraction having excellent low temperature characteristics, said fraction being prepared by bringing a by-product oil fraction containing diphenylmethane and 1,1-diphenylethane into contact with alkylbenzenes in the presence of a ZSM-5 type synthetic zeolite catalyst, then recovering a fraction containing 1,1-diphenylethane and other diarylalkanes and containing mainly components having boiling points in the range of 270.degree. to 300.degree. C. as atomspheric pressure basis, said by-product oil fraction being by-produced in the preparation of ethylbenzene by alkylating benzene with ethylene.

Electrical insulating oil comprising improved fraction

The present invention relates to an improved electrical insulating oil composition which has excellent electrical characteristics and is suitable for use in impregnating electrical appliances in which plastic dielectric material is used, and further relates to electrical appliances impregnated with such a composition. The electrical insulating oil composition is produced by bringing a by-product oil fraction mainly containing components having boiling points in the range of 260.degree. to 330.degree. C. (atmospheric pressure basis) into liquid-liquid contact with an organic polar solvent; said by-product oil fraction being formed by alkylating benene or toluene with ethylene in the presence of an alkylation catalyst and then distilling the alkylation product; and said electrical insulating oil composition being characterized in that the ratio of the integrated intensity as chemical shift at 120 to 155 ppm of the spectrum measured by .sup.13 C NMR method to the total integrated intensity at 0 to 155 ppm of said spectrum is 70% or higher.

Electrical insulating oil composition and electrical appliances

A method for producing an electrical insulating oil composition composed of benzyltoluene and ditolymethane. The composition is excellent in low-temperature characteristics and contains substantially no chlorine. The method comprises the steps of reacting monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with diarylmethane which has been prepared without using a chlorinated hydrocarbon as a starting material, at a temperature of -10.degree. to 550.degree. C. in the presence of a disperoportionation catalyst to prepare a reaction product containing benzyltoluene and ditolylmethane, and recovering benzyltoluene and ditolylmethane from said reaction product by distillation.

Method for producing electrical insulating oil composition

A method for producing m-benzyltoluene with a high yield and excellent selectivity without producing undesirable heavier by-products. The method is characterized in that toluene and diphenylmethane are allowed to react at a reaction temperature in the range of 170.degree. to 400.degree. C. in the presence of a crystalline synthetic zeolite catalyst in which the molar ratio of SiO.sub.2 /Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 is 20 or higher and the openings of main pores are formed by ten-membered oxygen rings.
