A starter for an internal combustion engine has no radial protrusion of an auxiliary switch in a shape projected along an axial direction thereof, thus improving the degree of freedom in mounting the starter on the engine. An axially extending electromagnetic switch is mounted on a motor for turning it on and off. An auxiliary switch extends in an axial direction of the motor and is mounted thereon for operating the electromagnetic switch by means of an operation of a key switch. A pinion gear can be placed into or out of engagement with a ring gear of the engine so as to be driven by the motor. The motor has a bracket with a radially extending flange, through which the starter is mounted on the engine. The auxiliary switch is arranged at an inner side of a common tangent line between outer peripheries of the electromagnetic switch and the flange.

Starter for internal combustion engine

A starter includes a starter motor, a main circuit section, a main switch section including a main contact section to cut a current, a main plunger driven to open and close the main contact section, suction and holding coils, battery and motor terminals, and a switch terminal connected to the battery through a start switch, and opening and closing the main contact section in accordance with movement of the main plunger, a suction circuit section connected in parallel with the main circuit section and connected in series with the suction coil, a holding circuit section connected in series with the holding coil, and a breaking section connected in series with the suction coil inside the suction circuit section. The breaking section cuts electricity conduction when electricity is continuously conducted to the suction coil to bring about layer short circuit and a short circuit current flows at the suction circuit section.

Starter

Provided is a starter which reliably cuts off any abnormal current caused to flow through the motor and which can reduce the possibility of current cutoff in the case of normal supply current. According to the present invention, a starter includes: a motor having a field coil; and an electromagnetic switch for supplying an electric current from a battery to the motor to start an engine through a pinion gear, in which: a metal conductor is connected to an upstream side of the field coil to which the electric current is supplied; and the metal conductor has a narrowed portion endowed with a fuse function and having a small sectional area.

An electromagnetic starter switch in which a voltage from a power source is depressed by a resistor and applied to a motor by an auxiliary movable contact coming into contact with a first auxiliary fixed contact and a second auxiliary fixed contact before a pinion gear intermeshes with a ring gear, and the voltage from the power source is subsequently applied to the motor without modification by the main movable contact also coming into contact with a first main fixed contact and a second main fixed contact after the pinion gear intermeshes with the ring gear, wherein: the first main fixed contact, the second main fixed contact, the first auxiliary fixed contact, and the second auxiliary fixed contact are disposed on a main switch cover.

Electromagnetic starter switch

An electromagnetic starter switch in which a voltage from a power source is depressed by a resistor and applied to a motor by an auxiliary movable contact coming into contact with a first auxiliary fixed contact and a second auxiliary fixed contact before a pinion intermeshes with a ring gear, and the voltage from the power source is subsequently applied to the motor without modification by the main movable contact also coming into contact with a first main fixed contact and a second main fixed contact after the pinion intermeshes with the ring gear, wherein: a resistor is disposed between the first main fixed contact and the first auxiliary fixed contact or between the second main fixed contact and the second auxiliary fixed contact; and an electric current fuse is disposed between the second main fixed contact and the second auxiliary fixed contact or between the first main fixed contact and the first auxiliary fixed contact.

The brush device of a starter with an overheat protection device of the present invention is provided with brush holders, brushes slidably supported in the brush holders, respectively, springs contacting one sides of the brushes to press the brushes in the radial, inner directions, and thermostats disposed on the brushes and adapted to interrupt energization of a starting motor with a power when the brushes exceed a predetermined temperature, caused by the starting motor continuously energized with the power supply.

Starter with overheat protection device including brush device

In an electric starter motor, a planetary reduction assembly includes: a sun gear engraved in an outer circumferential portion on a front side of a motor output shaft formed integrally with the armature; a ring formed into a cylindrical shape with a rotation stop projecting on an outer circumferential wall surface thereof and coupled to a front bracket while its movement in the circumferential direction is restricted by the rotation stop; an internal gear formed into a bottomed cylindrical shape with a center hole formed in a central portion of a bottom thereof and an inner circumferential gear portion engraved in an inner circumferential wall surface thereof, the internal gear being fitted in the ring so as to open on a rear side; a discoid flange portion formed integrally with an end portion on the rear side of the starter output shaft, supported rotatably to the bottom of the internal gear through a bearing and rotatably supporting an end portion on the front side of the motor output shaft through a bearing; and a plurality of planetary gears rotatably supported to a plurality of pins implanted concentrically at an equiangular pitch on an end face on the rear side of the flange portion, respectively, and engaging with the inner circumferential gear portion and the sun gear, and wherein the internal gear is fitted in the ring so as to slidingly rotate relative to the ring when a rotational torque to be applied to the starter output shaft exceeds a predetermined transmission rotational torque.

Electric starter motor

A low-cost permanent magnet dynamo-electric machine which can prevent an occurrence of a chip in a permanent magnet and is superior in the ease of fabricating the machine. This machine has an elastic catching member consisting of a ring-like portion and a plurality of protruding pieces axially projected from this ring-like portion. This machine further has a yoke, onto the inner circumferential surface of which a plurality of auxiliary poles are welded at an isotropic angular pitch. Further, in this machine, each of permanent magnets has a side surface brought into abutting engagement with the corresponding auxiliary pole. Moreover, the protruding pieces of the elastic catching member are forced into a space between the other side surface of each of the permanent magnets and the adjoining auxiliary pole, so that the plurality of the permanent magnets surround an armature. Furthermore, the ring-like portion of the elastic catching member is put into abutting engagement with a rear end face of each of the permanent magnets.

Permanent magnet dynamo-electric machine

A planetary gear reduction mechanism permitting easy mounting of a plate that separates a gear reduction section from a motor section. A flange portion 20 that is integrally formed with an output shaft rotation axis 11 is provided on its rear side a ring of support pins 21 having an open-ended cylinder shape and circumferentially equally spaced in a circle. A plate 22 has on its front side of the flange portion 22a a ring of projections 22b circumferentially equally spaced, and the projections 22b are engaged with the support pins 21. With planetary gears 7 attached onto the support pins 21, the plate 22 is mounted by press-fit inserting the projections 22b into the openings of the support pins 21.

Planetary gear reduction mechanism

A planetary gear speed reducer and a machining method for a planetary gear supporting pin which enable the supporting pin to be formed as an integral part of a flange section by forging so as to reduce the number of parts, permit greater ease of assembly, and achieve lower cost and also to make it easier to obtain perpendicularity of the supporting pin with respect to the flange section. A plurality of supporting pins which are formed in hollow cylindrical shapes are pressed out at equal angle pitches on the same circumference on the rear end surface of a flange section which is made integral with an output rotary shaft. The front end surface of the flange section has recessed sections which are formed coaxially with the supporting pins. The outside diameters of the supporting pins are made smaller than the inside diameters of the recessed sections. The distal ends of the supporting pins are open and the hollow sections of the supporting pins are communicated with the recessed sections.
