To provide an organic compound having a high electron injection/transport performances, an excellent hole blocking ability, and a stable thin-film state, as a material for organic electroluminescent devices with high efficiency and high durability, and also to provide an organic electroluminescent device having a high efficiency and high durability by using the compound. An organic electroluminescent device comprising a pair of electrodes, and one or more organic layers sandwiched between the pair of electrodes, wherein the compound having a fused-azole ring structure of the general formula (1) is used as a constituent material of at least one organic layer.

To provide a material for an organic EL device that is excellent in hole injection and transport abilities, electron blocking ability, thin film stability, and durability, as a material for an organic EL device with high efficiency and high durability, and also to provide an organic EL device having a high efficiency, a low driving voltage, and a long lifetime by combining the material with various materials for an organic EL device that is excellent in hole and electron injection and transport abilities, electron blocking ability, thin film stability, and durability. An organic electroluminescent device comprising at least an anode, a hole transport layer, a light emitting layer, an electron transport layer and a cathode in this order, wherein the hole transport layer comprises a carbazole compound of the following general formula (1), and the light emitting layer comprises a blue light emitting dopant.

The present invention provides an organic EL device having at least an anode, a first hole transport layer, a second hole transport layer, a luminous layer, an electron transport layer, and a cathode in this order, wherein the second hole transport layer contains an arylamine compound represented by the following general formula (1), and the electron transport layer contains a pyrimidine derivative represented by the following general formula (2). The organic EL device of the present invention has a high efficiency, and is driven at a low driving voltage. Further, it has a particularly long lifetime.
