A cyclic olefin resin composition film having high toughness with less difference in toughness between length and width directions. The cyclic olefin resin composition film contains a cyclic olefin resin, a styrene elastomer and inorganic oxide fine particles having an average particle diameter of 40 nm or smaller, and has a linear expansion coefficient of 40 ppm/&#xb0; C. to 60 ppm/&#xb0; C. This film attains high toughness with less difference in toughness between length and width directions.

Provided is a cyclic olefin resin composition film having a small in-plane retardation and high toughness. The cyclic olefin resin composition film contains a cyclic olefin resin and a styrene elastomer having a storage modulus of lower than 100 MPa at 0&#xb0; C. to 100&#xb0; C. The styrene elastomer is dispersed in the cyclic olefin resin in an amount of 5 to 35 wt %. With this configuration, it is possible to lower the in-plane retardation of the film while ensuring the high toughness of the film.

A retardation film is provided and is formed by laminating a thermoplastic norbornene resin film, an anchor layer, an alignment film and a phase difference layer in this order. In this retardation film, the anchor layer is formed by applying an anchor material including a tri-, or more-functional acrylate monomer of 50 parts by weight or more and 90 parts by weight or less onto the thermoplastic norbornene resin film and then, drying and curing the anchor material with ultraviolet light.

The light transmission film is disposed between the polarization plate and the light source and includes a plurality of prisms formed on a surface thereof, the plurality of prisms each having a ridge line in a first direction and being continuously arranged in a second direction perpendicular to the first direction. In the illumination apparatus, the light transmission film is disposed such that a ridge line direction of the plurality of prisms is one of a perpendicular direction and an approximately perpendicular direction to a transmission axis of the polarization plate.

A method of manufacturing the optical sheet is provided. The method includes: a first step of heating a composition containing a liquid crystal monomer or liquid crystal prepolymer and a photopolymerization initiator at a temperature equal to or higher than a melting point of the liquid crystal monomer or liquid crystal prepolymer and pressing the composition in a state where the composition is held between a master including a plurality of solid structures disposed continuously in one surface and having shape anisotropy in the one surface and a light transmission film disposed so as to face the solid structures of the master. By generating a difference in the indices of refraction in the prism extension direction and the prism alignment direction orthogonal thereto, for the light incident on the light-transmitting film, the polarization component Lx oscillating in the prism extension direction and the polarization component Ly oscillating in the prism alignment direction can have different transmission characteristics. For example, by setting the index of refraction in the prism extension direction greater than the index of refraction in the prism alignment direction (nx&#x3e;ny), among the light incident on the light-transmitting film, the amount of return light of the polarization component Lx oscillating in the prism extension direction is greater than that of the polarization component Ly oscillating in the prism alignment direction. In this way, not only a light-collecting function, but also a predetermined polarization split function is obtained.
