The present invention pertains to glass containing, in terms of mass % on an oxide basis, 40-80% of SiO, 1-30% of AlO, and 1-40% of CaO, the glass having dmisteinbergite as the crystalline phase. Such glass makes it difficult for cracks to progress and has exceptional crack resistance.

To provide a glass plate for display devices wherein without carrying out a post treatment, the depth of a compression stress layer is increased, while the surface compression stress is prevented from being excess only by chemical tempering. A glass plate for display devices, which is obtained by chemically tempering a glass plate comprising, as represented by mol % based on the following oxides, from 50 to 74% of SiO, from 1 to 10% of AlO, from 6 to 14% of NaO, from 3 to 15% of KO, from 2 to 15% of MgO, from 0 to 10% of CaO and from 0 to 5% of ZrO, wherein the total content of SiOand AlOis at most 75%, the total content of NaO and KO, i.e. NaO+KO, is from 12 to 25%, and the total content of MgO and CaO, i.e. MgO+CaO, is from 7 to 15%.

To provide glass for a data storage medium substrate, whereby high heat resistance can be obtained. A glass composition for substrates excellent in productivity is provided by lowering the high temperature viscosity while securing characteristics and quality required for FPD substrates, particularly for PDP substrates. A glass composition for substrates, which is characterized by comprising, as represented by mass% based on oxides, from 55 to 75% of SiO, from 5 to 15% of AlO, from 4 to 18% of MgO, from 3 to 12% of CaO, from 4 to 18% of SrO, from 0 to 20% of BaO, from 6 to 20% of NaO+KO, from 0.5 to 6% of ZrOand from 18 to 25% of MgO+CaO+SrO+BaO, as a glass matrix composition, and containing from 0.001 to 0.6% of SO, and which is further characterized in that when the viscosity is represented by &#x3b7;, the temperature satisfying log&#x3b7;=2 is at most 1,545&#xb0; C. and the devitrification temperature is at most the temperature satisfying log&#x3b7;=4, the thermal expansion coefficient is from 75&#xd7;10to 90&#xd7;10/&#xb0; C., the specific gravity is at most 2.8, and the glass transition point is at least 600&#xb0; C.

Glass composition for substrates and process for its production

A process for producing a glass substrate, which includes forming molten glass obtained by melting raw materials into a glass ribbon in a float bath, annealing the glass ribbon by a cooling apparatus, and cutting the glass ribbon to form the glass substrate, where the hydrogen concentration in the atmosphere of a float bath exceeds 3%, and the glass retention time in the float bath is from 4 to 15 minutes.
