A liquid discharge apparatus includes a print head with a nozzle discharging a liquid, a pump to suction the liquid from the nozzle, and to eject the liquid into a waste liquid tank, a control unit to change a driving amount of the pump to control an amount of the liquid ejected, and a calculation unit to calculate an amount of the liquid in the tank. The control unit drives the pump by a second driving amount less than a first, if a sum of an amount of the liquid ejected when the pump is driven by the first driving amount and an amount of the liquid in the waste liquid tank is equal to or greater than a predetermined amount. The calculation unit calculates a cumulative amount of the liquid suctioned by the pump from the nozzle as the amount of the liquid in the waste liquid tank.

A printing apparatus according to an embodiment of this present invention includes a printhead with an orifice for discharging ink, and a recovery unit configured to perform recovery of the printhead by driving a print element of the printhead to discharge ink from the orifice. An ejection apparatus includes an ejection head having an ejection port surface and configured to eject a liquid to a recording medium for recording, a wiper configured to wipe the surface, and a moving unit configured to relatively move the wiper and the head to move the wiper in a first direction along the surface with respect to the head. The apparatus performs a first mode for performing the wiping while relatively moving the wiper and the head at a first speed, and a second mode for performing the wiping while relatively moving the wiper and the head at a second speed higher than the first speed. When the apparatus performs the wiping after the recording and then performs subsequent recording, the apparatus performs the second mode. When the apparatus performs the wiping after the recording and then performs no subsequent recording, the apparatus performs the first mode.

An ink tank stores the ink to be supplied to the printhead. An ink supply path connects the printhead to the ink tank. A first closing unit closes the ink suction path. An inkjet recording apparatus includes a recording head including a first discharge port configured to discharge a first amount of ink droplets and a second discharge port configured to discharge a second amount of ink droplets smaller than the first amount, a cap, a suction unit, and a determination unit configured to determine whether to perform a first recording operation by using the first and second discharge ports or a second recording operation by only using the first discharge port.
