Provided is a water repellent composition which does not use a fluorine-containing monomer, especially a fluoroalkyl group-containing monomer. A water repellent composition which contains (1) (a) a polymer which has a repeating unit derived from an amide group-containing monomer that is represented by formula: (wherein R1 represents an organic residue having an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable group; R2 represents a hydrocarbon group having 7-30 carbon atoms; and R3 represents a hydrocarbon group having 1-5 carbon atoms) in an amount of 2-100% by weight relative to the polymer, and (2) a liquid medium.

A process for producing a polyoxyalkylenecarboxylic acid which comprises: (A) a step of obtaining a salt of a polyoxyalkylenecarboxylic acid by reacting a polyoxyalkylene compound having hydroxyl group at one or both ends of the molecule with a salt of a halogenated acetic acid or a salt of a halogenated propionic acid in an amount of 4 to 50 mol per 1 mol of the polyoxyalkylene compound and an alkali metal hydroxide in an amount of 8 to 70 mol per 1 mol of the polyoxyalkylene compound in the presence of an organic solvent at 80.degree. to 150.degree. C.; (B) a step of converting the obtained salt of a polyoxyalkylenecarboxylic acid into the polyoxyalkylenecarboxylic acid by adjusting pH of the reaction mixture obtained in step (A) to 3 or less by adding an inorganic acid; (C) a step of removing byproducts and the like by washing the obtained solution containing the polyoxyalkylenecarboxylic acid with an aqueous solution of an inorganic salt; and (D) a step of removing the organic solvent and water at a decreased pressure at 50.degree. to 120.degree. C. and removing precipitated salts by filtration. A high purity, high molecular weight polyoxyalkylenecarboxylic acid which contains only small amounts of unreacted starting materials or byproducts can easily be obtained.

A process for producing a polyoxyalkylene derivative substituted with succinimidyl group which comprises reacting a polyoxyalkylene compound having carboxyl group at ends with N-hydroxysuccinimide in an inert solvent in the presence of dicyclohexylcarbodiimide; filtering an obtained reaction product; and crystallizing the polyoxyalkylene derivative substituted with succinimidyl group by adding isopropyl alcohol to a filtrate obtained by the filtration, an amount by weight of isopropyl alcohol being 1 to 100 times as much as an amount by weight of the polyoxyalkylene compound having carboxyl group at ends. Materials can be handled with safety in the process of the present invention, and a highly pure polyoxyalkylene derivative substituted with succinimidyl group which does not cause turbidity in an aqueous solution and has an excellent quality as a material for drugs can be produced.
