Metallized polymer compositions are disclosed, the surface of which comprises an intermetallic compound of a metal element A (Sn, As, Sb or Bi) and a metal element B (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Ga, Ru, Rh, Pd, Ag, Cd or In), preferably an intermetallic compound of antimony and a metal element B. Processes for producing such metallized polymer compositions involve either the reduction of a metal element A compound in the presence of metallic metal element B and the polymer or the compression of a laminate of metal element A and metal element B layers onto the polymer. The metallized polymers are useful in the production of printing circuit boards, electromagnetic interference shielding devices, membrane switches, capacitors, conductive fibers, magnetic tapes and disc, antistatic mats, barrier polymers and optical storage devices.

An aqueous stable dispersion of positively charged polyfluorocarbon resin particles having a particle size of less than about 10 .mu.m contains both a cationic and a nonionic fluorocarbon surfactant in a molar ratio between 25:1 and 1:3.5 and in a total amount of at least 3.times.10.sup.-3 millimoles per m.sup.2 of surface area of said particles. The fluorocarbon surfactants give the dispersions storage-stability even in the presence of a strong electrolyte and make them suitable for use in electroplating baths.

Stable dispersion of positively charged polyfluorocarbon resin particles

A process is provided for simultaneously coating an article with a metal and a synthetic resin. In this process, the article to be coated is made the cathode in an aqueous electroplating bath. The electroplating bath contains (1) a metal salt, (2) particles of a synthetic resin in a concentration of about 3 to about 250 grams per liter of bath, (3) a cationic surfactant and (4) a nonionic surfactant. The concentration of the resin particles in the bath is from about 3 to about 250 grams per liter and the particle size of the resin is less than about 10 micrometers. The cationic and nonionic surfactants are used in a ratio of between 100:1 and 2:1 and the concentration of the two surfactants in the bath is at least 4.times.10.sup.-3 mmoles per m.sup.2 of surface area of the particles. The bath is subjected to electrolysis until a coating of a metal and the resin forms on the surface of the article. A resinous coating is deposited over the layer of metal and resin. The process is applicable to resinous compounds which do not contain fluorocarbon groups. The surfactants are those which are of the non-fluorocarbon type.

Polyfluorocarbon resin particles and metals are codeposition from electroplating baths to form coating layers of a very homogeneous structure, when said positively charged resin particles having a particle size of less than about 10 .mu.m are kept dispersed in said baths in the presence of both a cationic and a nonionic fluorocarbon surfactant in a molar ratio between 25:1 and 1:3.5 and in a total amount of at least 3 .times. 10.sup.-3 millimoles per m2 of surface area of said particles.
