A portable electronic device may include a housing, a display at least partially within the housing, a transparent cover over the display, and a battery at least partially within the housing. The battery may include a battery cell, a pouch encasing the battery cell, and a gas release relief system including a gas-permeable membrane configured to prevent liquid from escaping the pouch and a valve configured to selectively release gas from the pouch. The device may also include a processing system configured to, in a first mode of operation, cause the valve to open to allow gas to be released from the pouch, and, in a second mode of operation, cause the valve to close.

A method of providing a graphical output may include scanning at least a portion of a user's face using a sensor; generating a depth map using the scan; and determining a similarity score between the depth map and a set of stored biometric identity maps that are associated with a registered user. In response to the similarity score exceeding a threshold, the user may be authenticated as the registered user. The method may further determine a corrective eyewear scenario, select a display profile that is associated with the corrective eyewear scenario, and generate a graphical output in accordance with the selected display profile.

A stylus and/or a host device can be provided with components to mitigate and/or avoid damage to the stylus and/or the host device when dropped. Such components can cause the stylus and the electronic device to separate when drop motion is detected. Such separation can reduce and/or prevent damage that would have otherwise occurred if the stylus and the electronic device remained coupled together during impact. Examples of coupling and detachment mechanisms include magnetic and mechanical components.

A portable electronic device having a detection device is used to alert a user when the portable electronic device in undergoing a strain or deformation which could damage the portable electronic device. The alert includes an audible sound and/or a vibration event which signal to the user to remove the strain or deformation from the portable electronic device. The detection device may include a strain gauge attached to an enclosure of the portable electronic device. The strain gauge may output a change in electrical resistance in response to strain or deformation on the enclosure.

An electronic device may have a housing in which a display and other components are mounted. Audio components such as a speaker and microphone and other electrical components may be mounted in an interior portion of the housing. A housing port may be formed from one or more openings that pass through the housing. The audio component or other component may be aligned with the housing port. A shutter may be interposed between the audio component and the housing port. The shutter may have an electrically controlled positioner that is used to position a movable shutter member. The shutter may be closed by placing the shutter member in a position in which the housing openings are blocked, thereby preventing intrusion of contaminants into the interior portion of the housing. The shutter may be opened by placing the shutter member in a position in which the housing openings are unblocked, thereby allowing sound to pass through the housing port.
