The present invention provides an atherectomy catheter which has a cutting element that is able to cut both soft tissue and hard tissue, and methods of cutting material from a blood vessel lumen using a rotating cutting element. The cutting element has a sharp cutting edge that surrounds a cup-shaped surface and at least one surface of abrasive material. The cup-shaped surface directs the cut material into a tissue chamber. The cutting edge and the cup-shaped surface together are well suited to cut and remove relatively soft tissue from the blood vessel. The abrasive material surface in combination with the cutting element is well suited to abrade and remove hard material from the blood vessel.

A catheter is provided, which includes a cutting element having one or more raised elements. The cutting element has a cup-shaped surface at the distal end that may be smooth and continuous except for the raised elements.

A tissue ablation system including numerous components and methods is described herein for encircling target tissue and generating tissue ablation volumes in various biological tissues. The biological tissue includes tissue of a variety of organs of the human body including the liver, spleen, kidney, lung, breast and other organs, but is not so limited. The tissue ablation device comprises an energy source and at least one trocar coupled to the energy source, the trocar having a body, a proximal end, and a distal end. The trocar carries an electrode array that comprises a plurality of electrodes, each electrode of the plurality of electrodes is configured to extend from the trocar when moved from a retracted state to a deployed state, and to have at least one radius of curvature in the deployed state so that the electrode array forms a series of shaped electrodes in the deployed state.

Devices and methods for thermal ablation of biological tissue using geometric ablation patterns

A tissue ablation device and method for tissue ablation are described. The tissue ablation device comprises an energy source and an introducer coupled to the energy source, the introducer having a body, a proximal end, and a distal end. The introducer carries an electrode array that comprises a plurality of electrodes, each electrode of the plurality of electrodes is configured to extend from the body of the introducer when moved from a retracted state to a deployed state. The electrode array is designed to encircle a portion of a target tissue when the electrodes are extended into the deployed state and to form a relatively spherical shaped ablation pattern in a tissue volume surrounding the target tissue when energized by the energy source.

Device and method for thermal ablation of biological tissue using spherical ablation patterns

A tissue-ablation method and apparatus are disclosed. The apparatus includes a plurality of RF ablation electrodes, and a plurality of sensor elements, each movable from retracted to deployed positions in a tissue to be ablated. A control device in the apparatus is operatively connected to the electrodes for supplying an RF power to the electrodes, to produce tissue ablation that advances from individual-electrode ablation regions to fill a combined-electrode ablation volume. The control device is operatively connected to the sensor elements for determining the extent of ablation in the regions of the sensor elements. The supply of RF power to the electrodes can thus be regulated to control the level and extent of tissue ablation throughout the combined-electrode volume. The electrodes are preferably hollow-needle electrodes through which liquid can be infused into the tissue, also under the control of the control unit, to modulate and optimize tissue ablation.

Tissue ablation apparatus and method

A cell necrosis apparatus includes an introducer with a distal end sufficiently sharp to penetrate tissue, an energy delivery including a plurality of electrodes and a slidable sensing member. Each electrode of the plurality of electrodes has a tissue piercing distal end and is positionable in the introducer as the introducer is advanced through tissue. At least one electrode of the plurality of electrodes is deployable with curvature from the introducer. The slidable sensing member is positionable within the introducer and electrically coupled to the energy delivery device. The sensing member is configured to measure a property of the energy delivery device or at least one electrode of the plurality of electrodes.

Cell necrosis apparatus and method

A cell necrosis apparatus includes an introducer with a distal end sufficiently sharp to penetrate tissue. An energy delivery device has a first set of RF electrodes and a second set of RF electrodes. Each RF electrode of the first and second sets has a tissue piercing distal end and is positionable in the introducer as the introducer is advanced through tissue. The first and second sets of RF electrodes are deployable with curvature from the introducer. The second set of RF electrodes is deployable a greater distance from the introducer than the first set of RF electrodes.

Cell necrosis apparatus

An ablation apparatus has an expandable member that is inserted into an organ of a body and ablates all or a selected portion of the inner layer of the organ. Electrolytic solution fills the expandable member, and the expandable member includes a plurality of apertures from which electrolytic solution flows from the expandable member. First and second fluid conduits, which can be first and second conforming members, are in a surrounding relationship to the expandable member. The second conforming member, including a conductive surface, is made of a material that provides substantial conformity between the conductive surface and a shape of the inner layer of the organ. A plurality of electrodes is positioned between the two conforming members. The expandable member serves as an insulator to RF energy. Each electrode includes an insulator formed on a surface of the electrode positioned adjacent to the second conforming member. The combination of sandwiching the electrodes between the two conforming members, and the use of two insulators, one on the electrode and the other on the expandable member, provides selectable ablation of the inner layer of the organ. A feedback device is included and is responsive to a detected characteristic of the inner layer. The feedback device provides a controlled delivery of RF energy to the electrodes.

Thin layer ablation apparatus

A cell necrosis apparatus includes an introducer with a distal end sufficiently sharp to penetrate tissue. An energy delivery device has a first set of RF electrodes, a second set of RF electrodes and a third RF electrode. Each of electrodes has a tissue piercing distal end and is positionable in the introducer as the introducer is advanced through tissue. The first and second sets of RF electrodes are deployable with curvature from the introducer. The third RF electrode is deployable from the introducer with less curvature than the first and second sets of RF electrodes. The second set of RF electrodes is deployable a greater distance from the introducer than the first set of RF electrodes.

An ablation apparatus includes an introducer with a distal end sufficiently sharp to penetrate tissue. An energy delivery device is configured to be coupled to an energy source. The energy delivery device includes a first electrode and a second electrode each with a tissue piercing distal portion. The first and second electrodes are at least partially positionable in the introducer and deployable from the introducer at a selected tissue site to an expanded state. In the expanded state the deployed first and second electrodes distend laterally away from the introducer with a radius of curvature to form a shaped array of deployed electrodes at the tissue site when positioned at the selected tissue site. The first electrode distal portion and the second electrode distal portion are each at least partially made of a shaped memory alloy material that displays stress induced martensite behavior above body temperature. A cable couples the energy source to the energy delivery device.

Multiple electrode ablation apparatus and method

A transurethral needle ablation device for use with the human hand for radio frequency ablation of a target volume in the tissue of a prostate of a human male having a bladder with a base and a penis with a urethra therein formed by a urethral wall extending into the base of the bladder along a longitudinal axis with the tissue of the prostate surrounding the urethra near the base of the bladder. The device comprises a bridge having proximal and distal extremities and having a passage therein extending from the proximal extremity to the distal extremity. A sheath having proximal and distal extremities is secured to the bridge and has a passageway therein in communication with the passage in the bridge. The sheath is sized so that it can enter the urethra and has a length so that when its distal extremity is in the vicinity of the prostate, the proximal extremity is outside the urethra. A disposable needle assembly having proximal and distal extremities is removably mounted in the passage in the bridge and extends through the passageway in the sheath. The needle assembly includes at least one needle electrode and an insulating sleeve coaxially disposed on the needle electrode. The proximal extremity of the needle assembly is caused to be moved sideways at an angle with respect to the longitudinal axis to face the urethral wall. A mechanism is carried by the proximal extremity of the needle assembly and the bridge for causing advancement of the needle electrode and the insulation sleeve thereon through the urethral wall and into the target volume in the tissue of the prostate with a portion of the electrode being free of the insulation but with the insulation extending through the urethral wall.
