The gas phase exothermic reaction of a feed gas mixture is carried out by providing first and second chambers in fluid communication with one another and each containing a bed of solid heat exchange material and at least one bed of catalyst material, each chamber being selectively operable in cooling and heating modes. The feed gas mixture is introduced into a selected one of the chambers when the selected chamber is in the cooling mode and the other chamber is in the heating mode so that the feed gas mixture flowing through the selected chamber contacts the bed of heat exchange material before contacting the bed of catalyst material, the feed gas mixture being reacted in the catalyst bed to form a gaseous product. The gaseous product is conducted from the selected chamber to the other chamber so that the gaseous product flowing through the other chamber contacts the bed of catalyst material before contacting the bed of heat exchange material. The direction of gas flow through the chambers is periodically reversed so that the first and second chambers alternately operate in the cooling and heating modes, thereby forming between the first and second chambers a hot zone containing the gaseous products. A portion of the gaseous product is discharged from the hot zone so as to withdraw sufficient heat to maintain the reaction in the catalyst bed of the selected chamber at a temperature below a predetermined maximum temperature, while maintaining autothermicity.

Process and apparatus for gas phase exothermic reactions

A spout-fluid bed drying system and process is comprised of a spout-fluid bed dryer having a conical shaped lower section provided with a packing of heat exchange particles. A cyclone separator is connected to the top of the dryer with separated particles collected by a receiver connected to the leg of the cyclone. A vapor fan compresses the air-vapor mixture before it goes to the heat recuperator and mixing chamber. A tube-shell type heat exchanger, wherein effluent gases from the vapor fan are preheated with heat exchange with the outcoming high temperature gases. A combustion and incineration chamber wherein a natural gas burner is installed at the top and the high temperature flame is used to incinerate the effluent gases introduced from the annulus channel of the chamber to have the odors and VOCs destroyed. A mixing chamber wherein high temperature stream from the incineration chamber is mixed with low temperature stream from the vapor fan to serve as the drying media with the temperature maintained at around 400.degree. C. A slurry discharge nozzle is disposed below the packing and connected to a slurry container via piping and a slurry pump for releasing slurry to the surface of the particles within the packing. Evaporation of water occurs mostly on the surface of particles by contact with hot drying media. A gas-air mixture is fed to the burner through a feed pipe line wherein fresh air is supplied from an air blower.

Spout-fluid bed dryer and granulator for the treatment of waste slurries

An external gas-fired heater for heating a water/glycol fluid is comprised of a housing having a combustion chamber therein. The chamber has a coil through which the water/glycol fluid is circulated and heated by a cylindrical gas burner disposed inside the coil with the coil spaced thereabout. The housing is adapted for mounting outside a building to which the heated fluid is convected for heat exchange with heating devices contained within the building. A cover is removably secured to the housing for access to the internal heater devices and is equipped to convect air within the housing for the air-gas mixing blower. Quick connect couplings permit the housing to be easily removed and replaced, if necessary. The cover also provides ease of access to the heater devices for servicing or replacement.

An integrated air conditioning and hot water supply system for conditioning air and supplying hot water to a building is described. The system incorporates a hot water tank in the system which feeds a heat exchanger to heat air which is recirculated from the building when required during cool weather periods. A combined air dehumidification device and cooling device are also provided to dehumidify and cool return air from the building in a recirculation circuit when required by the building during warm weather periods. The cooling devices incorporate coils connected to the city water supply whereby to preheat a supply of water to the hot water tank. The combined circuit also cools fresh air and treats it to provide a source of heated air to regenerate a desiccant wheel which is used as the dehumidification device. A heat recovery ventilator is also incorporated in the integrated system to treat exhaust air from the building during cool weather periods and to admit warmed fresh air thereto.

Integrated air conditioning system with hot water production

An air heating and humidifying system and method using direct contact heating principles. The system consists in providing a source of hot water by feeding hot flue gases in a direct contact water heater and wherein the water sprayed over a packing in the water heater is heated as it percolates through the packing and is in contact with the hot rising flue gases. This hot water from the direct contact water heater is used in a direct contact air treating chamber wherein it is sprayed over a further packing whereby to heat and humidify fresh air which is pushed through the packing by a fan and exits at an outlet flue of the treating chamber to supply hot moist fresh air in a building air conditioning system. The cooled water in the direct contact air treating chamber is collected and supplies the spray nozzle of the direct contact water heater to cool the hot flue gases which are rising therein and thereby enhances considerably the efficiency of the direct contact water heater.

The selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides to nitrogen is effected by reacting nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide or a mixture thereof with a reducing agent consisting of an aliphatic carboxylic acid having 1 to 5 carbon atoms at a temperature ranging from about 250.degree. to, about 600.degree. C., in the presence of a catalyst comprising a metal oxide selected from the group consisting of vanadium oxide, copper oxide, nickel oxide and iron oxide, the catalyst being supported on a porous carrier. The process of the invention enables one to substantially completely reduce NO.sub.x to harmless N.sub.2 in an efficient, environmentally friendly and cost-effective manner.

Selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides

The direct conversion of methane to hythane, an alternative fuel for internal combustion engines, is effected by subjecting methane to a controlled oxidation with water vapor at a temperature of about 400.degree. to about 500.degree. C. and a pressure of about 1 to about 5 atmospheres, in the presence of a catalyst comprising palladium or a binary alloy thereof with another metal selected from the group consisting of elements belonging to Group IB, Group IIA, Group VIII and the lanthanide series of the Periodic Table, the catalyst being supported on a porous carrier. The direct conversion of methane to hythane under conditions of low temperature and pressure in accordance with the present invention enables hythane to be produced not only economically and efficiently, but also at or near vehicle fueling sites, thereby eliminating the storage and transportation of dangerously reactive hydrogen for mixing with methane or natural gas.

A gas burner is described having a cylindrical combustion chamber having at least two spaced apart counter-rotation stationary tangential air injectors and at least three sets of radial injection holes in between for admitting air under pressure in the combustion chamber to cause adjacent counter-rotation air turbulence regions in said combustion chamber. The combustion chamber has a closed end and an open end with a gas injector tube extending in the chamber from the closed end and disposed centrally therein. The injector tube has combustion gas injection ports at least upstream and downstream of the at least two air injectors to create a combustion mixture which is initially fuel-lean to generate a flame having a lower temperature and producing less nitrogen oxide than with conventional gas burners of this type. An air chamber is provided about at least a portion of the combustion chamber and communicates with the tangential air injectors.
