Methods and apparatus for wireless communication using a matrix of reconfigurable cells is provided. Each cell has an antenna or antenna port and is reconfigurable to operate as a transmitter, receiver, angle-of-arrival detector or power harvester. Cells can be allocated to different tasks as needed. A reference frequency signal is distributed to each cell, with an in-phase version of the signal being delivered to a first subset of cells, and a quadrature version of the signal being delivered to a second subset of cells. The first and second subsets may be interleaved for example in a checkerboard pattern. Cells cooperate in pairs for transmission or reception of quadrature amplitude modulated signals. Groups of four cells may cooperate for angle of arrival detection. The cells may be configured as interferometric transmitter/receiver cells using 90 degree hybrid couplers and power detectors.

Method and apparatus for wireless transmission, reception and related operations using reconfigurable matrix of elements

A system for wireless power transfer (WPT) is described. The WPT system may be used for charging of electric vehicles or other mobile platforms. The WPT system includes a gap waveguide base including a conductive waveguiding structure and a bandgap structure along at least the lateral sides of the waveguiding structure. The WPT system also includes a charging plate separate from the gap waveguide base. The charging plate includes a conductive plate having a receiving structure for receiving the electromagnetic field from the gap waveguide base through an air gap. The disclosed WPT system enables propagation of an electromagnetic field through the air gap, including electromagnetic fields in the very high frequency (VHF) band.

Contactless transmission line for wireless power transfer

A single-layer substrate integrated directive broadside beam leaky-wave antenna is provided. Opposite ends of a leaky-wave structure are fed with anti-phase versions of a common signal, resulting in broadside frequencies being set apart from the open stopband. To achieve this, the common signal can be split into two equal length paths, one including a perfect electrical conductor (PEC) reflector and the other including a perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) reflector. Alternatively, the common signal can be split into two paths which differ in length by a half wavelength. A power splitter and feed horns can be used in the respective paths. The leaky-wave structure may have transverse slots which increase in width toward a midpoint of the structure. The antenna can be formed in a single planar portion of a lithographic structure, for example by patterning an upper conductive layer thereof.

Dual end-fed broadside leaky-wave antenna

A dual-band multiport receiver apparatus and a dual-band (or multiband) multiport transmitter apparatus are disclosed. The receiver apparatus may include: a multiport circuit having a plurality of 90-degree hybrid couplers and a power divider to generate a plurality of radio frequency (RF) signals based on a dual-band signal, a plurality of diode networks connected to the multiport circuit to generate a plurality of intermediate frequency (IF) signals based on the plurality of RF signals, two analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) connected to the diodes to convert the IF signals to two digital signals, and a digital signal processor connected to the ADCs to decode information carried by the dual-band signal based on the two digital signals.

Systems for concurrent dual-band interferometric transceiver based on multiport architecture

Various substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) filtering crossover systems are described. An example SIW filtering crossover system may include: a substrate; a top metal plate placed on top of the substrate; a bottom metal plate placed beneath the substrate; a plurality of metalized via-holes in the substrate connecting the top metal plate and the bottom metal plate; and a plurality of grounded-coplanar-waveguides (GCPWs) coupled to sidewalls of the crossover system, wherein each of the GCPWs connects the crossover system to a respective microstrip line for signal transmission between the respective microstrip line and the crossover system.

A probe includes a first rod having a first axis and a second rod having a second axis. A first end of the first rod is connected to a first end of the second rod to form an angle that maintains a 'total internal reflection' effect for waves propagating through the probe. A second end of the second rod includes a prong facilitating attachment of the probe to a housing block. The first axis and the second axis define a plane. A second end of the first rod includes a tapered face formed perpendicular to the plane. The tapered face is sufficiently flat to make planar contact with a portion of a component under study. A support is formed in the plane and connected to the second rod. A second end of the support includes a connector to facilitate attachment of the probe to the housing block.

Silicon probe for millimeter-wave and terahertz measurement and characterization

A dual polarized waveguide device includes a first waveguide that defines a first linear signal propagation path, a second waveguide that defines a second linear signal propagation path that is parallel to the first linear signal propagation path, and a polarization selective coupling interface coupling the first and second waveguides, the polarization selective coupling interface being configured to enable horizontally polarized signals to pass between the first and second linear propagation paths and prevent vertically polarized signals from passing between the first and second linear propagation paths.

A circuit antenna includes an active device, and first and second antennas. The first antenna is connected to an input port of the active device. The first antenna has a first radiation field at an operating frequency of the circuit antenna. The second antenna is connected to an output port of the active device. The second antenna has a second radiation field at the operating frequency. The active device is positioned within the first and second radiation fields to experience an input load matching impedance at the input port and an output load matching impedance at the output port, due to the first and second radiation fields.

An electronic impedance tuner comprises an adjusting circuit, N cell tuning circuits identical in structure and a switch controller. The adjusting circuit comprises a first microstrip line, a second microstrip line, a first capacitor, a second capacitor, a third capacitor, a first inductor, a second inductor and a first PIN diode. Each cell tuning circuit comprises a third microstrip line, a fourth microstrip line, a fourth capacitor, a fifth capacitor, a second PIN diode and a third capacitor. The capacitance Cof the fourth capacitor meets the condition: The length d of the third microstrip line meets the condition: The electronic impedance tuner has the advantages of being small in size and low in cost while having a high coverage rate in the Smith chart.

The waveguide structure is for determining Direction-of-Arrival of a signal received by first and second antennas spaced-apart from one another. The waveguide structure has a first input port connectable to the first antenna and connected to a first splitter; a second input port connectable to the second antenna and connected to a second splitter, the second input port being located adjacent to the first input port; a third splitter; and a fourth splitter. The waveguide structure has branches that connect input ports, splitters and output ports such that each output port provides a superposition of the signal received via the first antenna and the signal received by the second antenna. The waveguide structure has a phase shifting system that imparts at least a relative phase shift between the corresponding branches leading away from each corresponding splitter and has at least one cross-over junction formed between two of the branches.

Waveguide structure for use in direction-of-arrival determination system and associated determination method

A dielectric resonator antenna (DRA) array having an array feeding network and a parasitic patch array made up of individual antenna elements is provided with a dielectric lens made from a single piece of dielectric material in the form of a generally planar sheet. The sheet may be substantially coextensive with the DRA array so as to cover all of the antenna elements. The single piece of dielectric material has a plurality of dielectric portions defined by a plurality of holes through the sheet. Each dielectric portion may be positioned over one of the antenna elements. Adjacent dielectric portions are connected to each other along connecting edge portions thereof, and a single hole is defined through the sheet between connecting edge portions of a group of mutually adjacent dielectric portions.

An end fire circularly polarized (CP) substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) horn antenna and a method of manufacturing thereof are described. The antenna includes an input section for receiving radio frequency (RF) waves from a source; and a body extending from the input section for receiving the RF waves from the input section, the body comprising a plurality of radiating units, the plurality of radiating units being configured to radiate circularly polarized waves (CP) in a far field, wherein apertures of the plurality of radiating unit being located along an edge of a planar dielectric substrate, and wherein the horn antenna is in a planar form.

A device for estimating a two-dimensional direction of arrival (DOA) of an electromagnetic beam includes an antenna system, and a signal processor operatively coupled to the antenna elements of the antenna system. The antenna system includes a plurality of antenna elements arranged in a rectangular planar array and configured to receive signal components of the electromagnetic beam. The signal processor estimates the two-dimensional DOA of the electromagnetic beam based on relative phases of the signal components of the electromagnetic beam.

System and method for estimating the direction of arrival of an electromagnetic beam

A receiver for receiving a radio frequency (RF) signal that comprises a carrier signal modulated with a baseband symbol. The receiver includes a plurality of spatially-distributed antennas to receive the RF signal; a local reference signal generator configured to generate a local reference signal; a plurality of power couplers, each power coupler having a first input connected to a respective one of the antennas to receive a respective version of the RF signal, a second input connected to the local reference signal generator to receive the local reference signal, and an output to output a corresponding coupled signal; and a differentiator circuit connected to the power coupler outputs for determining a power differential between at least one pair of the coupled signals to recover the baseband symbol from the RF signal.

Spatially-distributed multi-input interferometer receiver for 5G backhauling systems and beyond

A non-reciprocal mode converting SIW includes a first straight SIW section, a second straight SIW section, and a curved SIW section coupling the first straight SIW section to the second straight SIW section. The curved SIW section included magnetic biasing at opposed corner regions. The magnetic biasing and a curvature of the curved SIW section causes: (i) a wave in a first transverse electric (TE) mode that propagates in a forward direction from the first straight section through the curved SIW section into the second straight SIW section to convert to a second TE mode, and (ii) a wave in the first TE mode that propagates in a reverse direction from the second straight SIW section through the curved SIW section into the first straight SIW section to maintain the first TE mode.
