Systems and methods provide a bottom hole assembly for a wellbore that includes a drill bit and multiple drilling tools. The multiple drilling tools include multiple sensors configured to capture a multiple instances of a common measurement type at multiple locations along a drill string. The multiple drilling tools also include processing circuitry configured to compare the multiple instances of the common measurement type to determine a difference among the multiple instances. The processing circuitry is also configured to determine that the difference is greater than a threshold corresponding to an inference of high frequency torsional oscillation. Furthermore, the processing circuitry is further configured to send an indication of an occurrence of high frequency torsional oscillation in the bottom hole assembly.

Systems and methods for detecting high frequency torsional oscillation

A computer-aided engineering (CAE) toolkit is disclosed that streamlines and automates aspects of a CAE simulation to validate the designs of pressure-controlling components, such as BOP rams. The CAE toolkit enables a designer to provide a model of a pressure-controlling component, and to provide property values that describe aspects of the system to be modeled. Based on these inputs, the CAE toolkit generates a model for the system that includes the pressure-controlling component, as well as any other components that will be part of the simulation. The CAE toolkit can automatically generate a finite element analysis (FEA) model from the system model, and then use the FEA model to perform a simulation of the pressure-controlling component during operation. The CAE toolkit enables a designer with no training or experience with CAE or FEA techniques to perform and automate simulations of the operation of a pressure-controlling component design.

Computer-aided engineering toolkit for simulated testing of pressure-controlling component designs

A multi-disciplinary optimization (MDO) framework and workflow facilitates analysis and optimization of set of designs of a pressure-controlling component. The MDO workflow generally enables design workflow integration and automation, which can improve engineering efficiency, and enables automated optimization within the workflow automation, which facilitates performance and reliability improvement for product development. The MDO workflow enables the integration of computer-aided design (CAD), finite element analysis (FEA), digital manufacturing simulation (DMS), and optimization packages to facilitate testing and optimization of a set of pressure-controlling component designs. As such, the MDO framework and workflow improve the efficiency of the design process by providing a scalable solution for automating aspects of the design process for a set of designs of a pressure-controlling component, which may represent a product family or a set of competing alternative designs.

Multi-disciplinary optimization-enabled design automation and optimization for pressure-controlling components

A digital avatar may be used to represent, track, and/or monitor behavior of a tool (e.g., a downhole tool) to track particular tools based on specific characteristics of the tool. For instance, a thermal digital avatar may be used to track or predict thermal generation for particular job durations or power levels based on physical characteristics of the tool. For example, the thermal digital avatar may be used to predict thermal generation based at least in part on a thermal efficiency that is based at least in part on the age of the tool, changes or imperfections in heatsinks, results of after-manufacture thermal testing, or a combination thereof.

Aspects of the disclosure can relate to a system for tracking fatigue damage experienced by a tool in real-time. The system can include a processor operably coupled to a memory and operable to execute one or more modules to generate master curve fitting coefficients for a connection type associated with a tool component (e.g., a component of a bottom hole assembly). The master curve fitting coefficients can be for a threaded connection master curve, a port hole master curve, and so forth. The processor can also be operable to execute the one or more modules to generate a fatigue calculator for the tool component. The system may receive a real-time trajectory for the tool, determine a curvature from the trajectory of the tool, determine a bending moment based upon the curvature, and determine fatigue damage for the tool component based upon the bending moment using the fatigue calculator.

A system and a method analyze fatigue damage of a bottom hole assembly ('BHA'), and more specifically, use a multi-scale approach for fatigue analysis of a BHA. Three length scales may be used in modeling of a BHA, namely the BHA scale, the component scale and the feature scale. Loading conditions for each collar/tool of the BHA may be determined, such as by use of a beam model, and may be applied to the finite element models for the collar/tool to determine the fatigue damage of each fatigue susceptible feature of each collar/tool. A cumulative fatigue damage of each critical feature may be determined, and the weakest component of the BHA may be identified. Prognostic and diagnostic implementation with well survey and drilling data may monitor fatigue damage of critical components of the BHA.
