A polymer composition that contains a polyaryletherketone and a liquid crystalline polymer that includes repeating units derived from naphthenic hydroxycarboxylic acids, naphthenic dicarboxylic acids, or a combination thereof in an amount of about 15 mol. % or less of the polymer is provided. The composition optionally contains reinforcing fibers in an amount of no more than about 10 wt. %.

Composition containing a polyaryletherketone and low naphthenic liquid crystalline polymer

A boron-containing nucleating agent is provided for use with a polyarylene sulfide. The boron-containing nucleating agent can have low crystallinity, a small particle size, and a large specific surface area. By selectively controlling certain aspects of the nucleating agent, the crystallization properties of a thermoplastic composition including the nucleating agent and a polyarylene sulfide can be significantly improved. For instance, the recrystallization temperature can be increased, which can allow the 'cooling time' during a molding cycle to be substantially reduced. Through use of the boron-containing nucleating agent the recrystallization temperature can be greater than about 231&#xb0; C.

Molded articles are disclosed having a complex three-dimensional shape. In one embodiment, the molded articles comprise tubular members formed through blow molding that have multiple linear sections separated by curved sections. The curved sections can include multiple angular displacements in multiple planes. The tubular members are molded from a polymer composition containing a high temperature polymer, such as a polymer having a melting point of greater than about 280&#xb0; C., such as greater than about 290&#xb0; C. In one embodiment, the tubular member includes at least three angular displacements of from about 60&#xb0; to about 120&#xb0;, such as from about 70&#xb0; to about 110&#xb0;.

Melt processed polyarylene sulfide compositions are described as are methods of forming the melt processed polyarylene sulfide compositions. The melt processed polyarylene sulfide compositions are formed according to a melt processing method that includes melt processing a mixture that includes a starting polyarylene sulfide, a disulfide compound and a filler. The melt processed polyarylene sulfide compositions may provide low chlorine content products having excellent strength characteristics.

Blow molded articles are made from a polymeric composition containing a mixture of polyphenylene sulfide resins. For instance, the polymeric composition may contain a linear polyphenylene sulfide resin combined with a branched polyphenylene sulfide resin. The composition can further contain a reinforcing agent, such as glass fibers, a polytetrafluoroethylene polymer, a polyphenylene oxide polymer, a silane coupling agent, and/or an impact modifier. Compositions made according to the present disclosure can have relatively high near zero shear rate melt strengths while also having high shear rate melt viscosities and high engineering stresses at a high percent elongations, making the compositions amenable to extrusion and molding processes. Compositions made according to the present disclosure are particularly well suited to molding articles with a complex shape. When producing blow molded articles, for instance, the composition provides better control over wall thickness while having improved interior surface smoothness at higher throughput and extrusion rates.

Fiber reinforced shaped articles and process for making same

An injection molded housing for a portable electronic device is provided. The housing contains a thermoplastic composition that includes a polyarylene sulfide melt processed in the presence of a disulfide compound and a filler. Without intending to be limited by theory, it is believed that the disulfide can undergo a chain scission reaction with the starting polyarylene sulfide to lower its melt viscosity, which can lead to decreased attrition of the filler and thus improved mechanical properties. Due to this ability to reduce viscosity during melt processing, the present inventors have discovered that relatively high molecular weight polyarylene sulfides can be fed to the extruder with little difficulty.

Housing for a portable electronic device

A method for injection molding a thermoplastic composition that contains a polyarylene sulfide and a boron-containing nucleating agent is provided. By selectively controlling certain aspects of the polyarylene sulfide and nucleating agent, as well as the particular manner in which they are combined, the crystallization properties of the resulting thermoplastic composition can be significantly improved. This allows the 'cooling time' during a molding cycle to be substantially reduced while still achieving the same degree of crystallization. The cooling time can be represented by the 'normalized cooling ratio', which is determined by dividing the total cooling time by the average thickness of the molded part.

Injection molding of polyarylene sulfide compositions

The present description discloses a polymeric composition which is a melt-processed alloy comprised of (a) a polyarylene sulfide resin, (b) a polyaryl-ether-ketone resin, and a reactive compound which results in (c) a graft copolymer of the polyarylene sulfide resin and/or the polyaryl-ether-ketone resin in addition to the starting resins. Exemplary melt-processed polymeric compositions can be made by reacting an alkoxy silane with the polyarylene sulfide resin and/or the polyaryl-ether-ketone resin to produce a graft copolymer of a portion of one or both of the resins, sufficient to render the composition uniform and homogeneous. It is normally preferred for the exemplary organosilane compound, to be an amino silane. The subject invention further reveals an insulated wire comprising (1) an electrical conductor and (2) a layer of the melt-processed alloy composition; and fiber reinforced composites comprising fibers substantially fully impregnated with the alloy polymeric composition.
