Techniques are provided to furnish a light sensor that includes a filter positioned over a photodetector to filter visible and infrared wavelengths to permit the sensing of ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. In one or more implementations, the light sensor comprises a semiconductor device (e.g., a die) that includes a substrate. A photodetector (e.g., photodiode, phototransistor, etc.) is formed in the substrate proximate to the surface of the substrate. In one or more implementations, the substrate comprises a silicon on insulator substrate (SOI). A filter (e.g., absorption filter, interference filter, flat pass filter, McKinlay-Diffey Erythema Action Spectrum-based filter, UVA/UVB filter, and so forth) is disposed over the photodetector. The filter is configured to filter infrared light and visible light from light received by the light sensor to at least substantially block infrared light and visible light from reaching the photodetector. The thickness of the SOI substrate can be tailored to modify received UV/visible wavelength ratios.

Ultraviolet sensor having filter

Embodiments of optical navigation modules (ONM) and methods of operating the same to block auto-movement due to ambient light are described. Generally, the method includes: (i) collecting a plurality of PD signal samples from a photodiode (PD) in an optical navigation module (ONM); (ii) determining a peak-to-peak variation (&#x394;PD) in the plurality of PD signal samples; (iii) comparing the peak-to-peak variation (&#x394;PD) to a specified threshold peak-to-peak variation (&#x394;PD); and (iv) if &#x394;PD is less than &#x394;PD, suppressing reporting of motion data derived from signals from a photodetector array (PDA) in the ONM to block auto-movement in an output from the ONM. Other embodiments are also described.

Adaptive ambient light auto-movement blocking in optical navigation modules

Finger navigation methods, devices and systems are disclosed. In one embodiment the system comprises a light source configured to radiate a light beam towards a tactile surface. The system also comprises a photo detector module configured to sense speckle beams emitted by a target surface navigating the tactile surface in response to light hitting the target surface. The system further comprises a processor configured to track a movement of the target surface with respect to the tactile surface based on output from the photo detector module and a conductor structure for capacitive sensing of the target surface with respect to the tactile surface. The conductor structure is configured to determine a plurality of navigational functionalities based on the capacitive sensing of the target surface with respect to the tactile surface, including at least one of single click, double click, and scrolling.

Current sensor output measurement system and method

A dual protocol input device for use with a host system is provided. In one embodiment, the input device comprises a chip with a number of semiconductor devices integrally formed thereon, including: an optical navigation sensor (ONS) to sense movement of the ONS relative to a surface; a wired protocol block to communicate data from the ONS to the host system by a wired communication protocol; a wireless protocol block to communicate data from the ONS to the host system by a wireless communication protocol; and a micro-controller coupled to the ONS, the wired protocol block and the wireless protocol block, to switch the input device between the wireless communication protocol and the wired communication protocol.

One embodiment relates to a user input device for tracking motion. The device includes a tracking ball and a user-accessible touching area for user manipulation of the tracking ball. First and second two-dimensional sensors are positioned at tracking heights away from the tracking ball. The first two-dimensional sensor may be positioned across the tracking ball and opposite to the user-accessible touching area. The second two-dimensional sensor may be positioned at an angle with respect to a z-axis defined as extending from the user-accessible touching area through a center of the tracking ball to the first two-dimensional sensor. Method and apparatus for quasi-3D tracking using 2D optical motion sensors

An optical navigation sensor (ONS) is provided having a spatial frequency filter to transmit radiation at selected spatial frequencies while attenuating other, undesired frequencies and harmonics. The ONS includes a radiation source to transmit radiation toward a portion of a surface that diffusely reflects radiation incident thereon. The spatial frequency filter is disposed to receive radiation scattered from the surface, and, in one embodiment, includes a number of non-circular openings to pass radiation of at least one pre-selected frequency while attenuating other frequencies and harmonics of the pre-selected frequency.

Optical navigation sensor including a spatial frequency filter

A system and method are provided for screening a semiconductor laser. The method includes: (i) operating the laser at a first of a number of drive currents; (ii) acquiring a number (N) of frames of data from a sensor in an optical navigation system (ONS) receiving speckle pattern in light from the laser reflected from a surface proximal to the ONS, the sensor data including differential signal values; (iii) calculating an average differential signal value (AVG) for the N frames of data; (iv) sorting the N frames of data across a plurality of bins including a Bin_0 for frames of data having a differential signal value within a predetermined amount of the AVG; and (v) determining if a number of frames of data in any bins other than Bin_0 exceed a predetermined threshold, and if so recording the drive current.

System and method for screening semiconductor lasers

A test system and method are provided for testing in parallel radiant output of multiple light emitting devices. Generally, the method involves: (i) providing a system having a master, calibrated power meter (CPM), a source transfer standard (STS), and multiple secondary, test site power meters (TSPMs); (ii) determining a relationship between electrical power supplied to the STS and a radiant output therefrom as measured by the CPM; (iii) calibrating the TSPMs using the STS and the relationship between the power supplied to the STS and the radiant output therefrom as determined by the CPM; and (iv) positioning the devices undergoing test on a fixture of the test system and positioning the fixture relative to the TSPMs to test radiant outputs of the devices. Preferably, the TSPMs are calibrated by exposing each to the STS at a known power, determining a difference between the radiant output measured by the CPM and TSPM, using this difference as an offset that is added to the a signal from the TSPM to provide a corrected radiant output for the device under test. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

Multi-site optical power calibration system and method

A method for optical spectrum analysis provides a tunable optical filter and scans a wavelength range of an optical signal that is larger than the free spectrum range of the tunable optical filter. The optical signal is filtered through the tunable optical filter. Separate multiple optical orders of the wavelengths scanned and filtered by the tunable optical filter are individually detected.

Full-band optical spectrum analyzer and method

A wavelength measurement or monitoring system provides a tunable Fabry-Perot optical filter. At least one known light source is used to calibrate and correlate separate wavelength bands scanned by the tunable Fabry-Perot optical filter. At least one wavelength reference is utilized to calibrate at least one wavelength band of the tunable Fabry-Perot optical filter. The wavelength reference is transferred to a wavelength band that is identified for measurement when the wavelength reference is not in a wavelength band identified for measurement by the tunable Fabry-Perot optical filter. An unknown optical signal is scanned through the tunable Fabry-Perot optical filter. The wavelengths in the unknown optical signal are specified.

Broad- and inter-band multi-wavelength-reference method and apparatus for wavelength measurement or monitoring systems

An optical signal measurement system provides a tunable optical filter. An unknown optical signal is scanned through the tunable optical filter. The wavelength and chromatic dispersion values of the unknown optical signal scanned through the tunable optical filter are measured by operating the tunable optical filter in a scanning mode for at least one of OSA and PMD measurements, and in a stepping mode for CD measurements. The wavelength and the dispersion values in the unknown optical signal are specified.

Optical signal measurement system

A method and apparatus for filter spectrum deconvolution and reshaping include providing a filter output of a spectrum signal and determining the intensity and wavelength of the spectrum signal at each spectral peak. The filter output is characterized as an integral of convolution of a spectrum signal function and a filter function. Transformation are then performed on the filter output to deconvolve and remove the undesirable filter function and add a desirable filter function to reshape the output filter spectrum.

A method and apparatus for utilizing tunable differential group delay with at least a component of a fiber optic transmission system includes providing a tunable differential group delay system that is optically connected to a component of the fiber optic transmission system. The tunable differential group delay system is then controlled to insert differential group delay into the component of the fiber optic transmission system.
