An ethylene-based copolymer is useful as a modifier for resins, e.g., polypropylene, and can be used in an ethylene/&#x3b1;-olefin copolymer composition containing the same ethylene-based copolymer. The inventive copolymer is characterize by: (a-1) having temperature (Tm) at the maximum peak in the endothermic curve, measured by a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC), of 40 to 90&#xb0; C., (a-2) containing the component soluble in decane at normal temperature at 1 to 70% b weight, and (a-3) containing the component soluble in decane at normal temperature which comprises (i) a recurring unit derived from ethylene and (ii) a recurring unit derived from an &#x3b1;-olefin of 4 or more carbon atoms, and in which a content of (i) the recurring unit derived from ethylene is 50 to 75% by mole.

A novel and useful linear triene compound represented by the following formula (1) is co-polymerized with an &agr;-olefin to obtain an ethylenically unsaturated copolymer which is superior in weather-ability, heat resitance and fastness to ozone, together with superior scorch stability and vulcanizability at high velocity

A rubber composition useful as a tire side wall or tire tread is formed from an unsaturated olefin copolymer (A) or (A&prime;) and diene rubber (B). Copolymers (A) and (A&prime;) are each obtained from (i) ethylene, (ii) aromatic vinyl compound, (iii) non-conjugated polyene, and, optionally (iv) alpha-olefin having at least 3 carbon atoms. When used in forming a tire side wall, copolymer (A) has a molar ratio of (i)/(iv) from 100/0 to 40/60; molar ratio of &lsqb;((i)&plus;(iv))/(ii)&rsqb; from 98/2 to 60/40; an intrinsic viscosity, measured in decalin, at 135&deg; C., from 1.0 to 6.0 dl/g; and iodine value from 10 to 50. For use in tire tread, copolymer (A&prime;), has a molar ratio (i)/(iv) from 100/0 to 40/60; molar ratio &lsqb;((i)&plus;(iv)):(ii)&rsqb; from 99/1 to 85/15. The weight ratio (A&prime;)/(B) is from 1/99 to 50/50. The compositions for tire side wall are characterized by excellent strength properties and bending fatigue resistance and low fuel consumption. The compositions for tire tread are characterized by superior strength properties, abrasion resistance and braking performance on wet road (wet ski resistance) and small rolling resistance.

Disclosed herein is an olefin copolymer shrink film comprising an &agr;-olefin/aromatic vinyl compound random copolymer. This &agr;-olefin/aromatic vinyl compound random copolymer comprises 99.9 to 58 mol % of structural units derived from ethylene, 0 to 30 mol % of structural units derived from an &agr;-olefin having 3 to 20 carbon atoms (provided that the total of the structural units derived from ethylene and the structural units derived from an &agr;-olefin having 3 to 20 carbon atoms ranges from 99.9 to 88 mol %), and 0.1 to 12 mol % of structural units derived from an aromatic vinyl compound. The &agr;-olefin/aromatic vinyl compound random copolymer has an intrinsic viscosity &lsqb;&eegr;&rsqb;, as measured in decalin at 135&deg; C., of 0.1 to 10 dl/g and has a melting point, as measured by a differential scanning calorimeter, of 60 to 125&deg; C. The olefin copolymer shrink film is oriented in at least one direction. The olefin copolymer shrink film has excellent low-temperature shrinkability and transparency.

Disclosed is a cycloolefin copolymer which is obtained from (A) a straight-chain or branched .alpha.-olefin of 2 to 20 carbon atoms, (B) a specific cycloolefin and (C) an aromatic vinyl compound and has an intrinsic viscosity [.eta.] of 0.1 to 10 dl/g, wherein the content of constituent units derived from the cycloolefin (B) and the content of constituent units derived from the aromatic vinyl compound (C) satisfy a specific relation. The cycloolefin copolymer has high heat resistance, low moisture absorption and small birefringence.

Stretched articles of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene are prepared by melt-kneading a mixture of ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene with an aliphatic compound (b.sub.1) of at least 8 carbon atoms having a melting point of at least 10.degree. C. and a boiling point of at least 130.degree. C. in a screw extruder while maintaining the mixture at a temperature from the melting point of the mixture to 300.degree. C. The molten mixture is melt-extruded through a die at a temperature from the melting point of the mixture to 300.degree. C. and the resulting unstretched extrudate is cooled to solidify it. The unstretched solidified extrudate is then subjected to a stretching treatment at a temperature of the melting point of the aliphatic compound (b.sub.1) to a point 20.degree. C. above the melting point of the mixture at a particular stretch ratio.

Disclosed herein are (1) a film of a liquid crystalline wholly aromatic polyester which is non-oriented and transparent, which film can be prepared by dissolving a liquid crystalline wholly aromatic polyester in a solvent, casting the resulting solution to form a film and volatirizing the solvent from the film as cast and (2) a film of a liquid crystalline wholly aromatic polyester which is oriented and polarizing, which film can be prepared by orienting the above-mentioned non-oriented film by drawing or heating.
