A surface lighting device has one single light source and a light-guide-board. The board includes a light-guiding-section and a light-emitting-section. A shorter side of the light-guiding-section is not more than 8 mm, and an area of the light-emitting-section is not less than 500 mm2. The light-emitting-section has the following features: (1) a ratio of min. luminance vs. max. luminance of is not less than 0.3; (2) an average luminance ranges from 1 cd/mto 200 cd/m, and (3) a change value in luminance per unit length is not more than (average luminance)&#xd7;100 cd/m. Employing plural light-emitting-elements in the light source allows the lighting device to produce versatile colors. The light source, light-guide-board and a holder are structured and shaped in optimum way, so that unevenness in luminance of the device is reduced. An LCD unit incorporating this surface lighting device increases its display quality, and a portable terminal incorporating this LCD unit produces easy-to-lead display.

A printer includes: a recording section for recording information on a recording medium; a medium carrying mechanism provided in an apparatus casing having an eject port that is opened in an upward direction or in a slanted upward direction; a medium accommodating section extending in a vertical or slanted vertical direction that defines a medium accommodating space that is continuous with the eject port; and an upward medium carrying mechanism that carries the recording medium upward by an amount according to the size of the recording medium stored in a size memory device, so that the re cording medium projects from the eject port by a predetermined constant length.

Optical pickup device

An antenna device includes radiation elements formed on a common antenna board, a feeding unit for feeding the radiation elements, and a ground plate provided in electrically-spaced relation to the radiation elements. The ground plate is mounted on a box-like metal body to form a short-circuit therewith. The radiation elements may have different line lengths for transmitting and receiving a plurality of wavelengths. The optical pickup includes an objective lens, a first optical unit having a light-emitting element and a light-receiving element which are used for recording on and reproduction from the high-density optical disk, a second optical unit having a light-emitting element and a light-receiving element which are used for recording on and reproduction from the low-density optical disk, a beam splitter for guiding optical axes of the first and second optical units to the same optical axis, and a wavelength filter for changing a diameter of light beams incident on the objective lens between at the time of recording and reproduction for the high-density optical disk and at the time of recording and reproduction for the low-density optical disk.

Optical pickup

In an optical pickup, an optical guide member is provided in an optical path of light from a light source, and has a plurality of inclined surfaces inclined with respect to a light beam emitted from the light source. A light-receiving element is provided for receiving light and for converting the received light into an electrical signal. The optical guide member and the light-receiving element are contained in a packaging member. The light beam from the light source is reflected by the plurality of inclined surfaces of the optical guide member, and then are directed to a recording medium. The reflected light from the recording medium is directed to the light-receiving element. At least one of dry air and inert gas such as nitrogen gas is charged in the interior of the packaging member at a pressure of 0.5 atm to 1.5 atm, thereby preventing the optical characteristics from being degraded.
