The present invention provides a novel method for producing a calcium aluminate compound having a modified surface. The present invention provides: a method for producing a modified calcium aluminate compound characterized by irradiating a calcium aluminate compound dispersed in an organic dispersion medium with a femtosecond laser, thereby modifying the surface of the calcium aluminate compound; and a modified calcium aluminate compound characterized by being obtained by this method and having at least one of an OH group, a CO group, a CH group, and an NH group.

Modified calcium aluminate compound and production method therefor

A needle-shaped body protrudes from a cantilever made of Si. Furthermore, the rear face of the cantilever is coated with aluminum (first metal) having a Fermi level higher than that of Si. The cantilever is dipped into an aqueous silver nitride solution containing the ions of Ag serving as a second metal. The electrons of Si flow out to the aqueous silver nitride solution due to the existence of the aluminum, and Ag nanostructures are precipitated at the tip end of the needle-shaped body. A probe for tip-enhanced Raman scattering in which the Ag nanostructures are fixed to the tip end of the needle-shaped body is manufactured. The sizes and shapes of the Ag nanostructures can be controlled properly by adjusting the concentration of the aqueous silver nitride solution and the time during which the cantilever is dipped into the aqueous silver nitride solution.

An object of the present invention is to provide a method for producing conductive mayenite, with which a reaction is completed in a short time, an operation can be simplified, the reaction is easily controlled, and the cost of energy can be reduced. The present invention is a method for producing conductive mayenite, characterized by mixing a mayenite type compound with a carbon component, placing the resulting mixture in an airtight container, and irradiating the mixture with a microwave in an inert gas atmosphere or in a vacuum atmosphere to heat the mixture.

Method for producing conductive mayenite type compound

The present invention provides a hydrogen production process, which is capable of producing hydrogen, which is a clean source of energy, simply and conveniently without using conventionally-used ammonia, with an extremely high level of safety. In accordance with the present invention, hydrogen is produced by substituting hydrogen for free oxygen in mayenite (CaAlOO) to obtain hydrogen-substituted mayenite (CaAlOH) and reacting the resultant hydrogen-substituted mayenite (CaAlOH) with water to produce hydrogen, and hydrogen is produced by substituting hydrogen for free oxygen in mayenite (CaAlOO) to obtain hydrogen-substituted mayenite (CaAlOH), irradiating the resultant hydrogen-substituted mayenite (CaAlOH) with ultraviolet rays to obtain conductive mayenite (CaAlOe), and reacting the resultant conductive mayenite (CaAlOe) with water to produce hydrogen.

Hydrogen production process

The present invention provides a production method of mayenite in which mayenite can be produced without requiring a high-temperature treatment, and the cost of equipment and heating cost are inexpensive, and in its turn, the production cost of mayenite is inexpensive. The production method of mayenite is characterized in that mayenite (CaAlO) is formed by baking katoite [CaAl(OH)]. A baking temperature of katoite is preferably from 300 to 500&#xb0; C. In addition, it is preferable to use, as the katoite, a product generated by introducing aluminum and calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)] into water and allowing them to react with water.

Production method of mayenite

The present invention provides a continuous production method of hydrogen which is able to produce hydrogen, which is clean energy, simply and continuously without using ammonia. The invention of the continuous production method of hydrogen includes a hydrogen production step comprising introducing mayenite (CaAlO) and calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)] into water and allowing them to react with water, thereby generating hydrogen and also forming katoite [CaAl(OH)]; a regeneration step comprising baking the formed katoite to regenerate mayenite and calcium hydroxide; and a circulation step comprising returning the regenerated mayenite and calcium hydroxide into the hydrogen production step. It is preferable that a temperature of water in the hydrogen production step is from 50 to 100&#xb0; C., and a molar ratio of mayenite to calcium hydroxide is 1/9. In addition, it is preferable that a baking temperature of katoite in the regeneration step is from 300 to 500&#xb0; C.

Continuous production method of hydrogen

One object of the present invention is to provide a method for preparing hydrogen which is able to simply produce hydrogen which is clean energy without using ammonia as used in the background art and which is very high in safety. The method for preparing hydrogen of the present invention is characterized in that hydrogen is generated by introducing mayenite (CaAlO) and calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)] into water and allowing them to react with water. Here, it is preferable that a temperature of water is from 50 to 100&#xb0; C., and a molar ratio of mayenite to calcium hydroxide is 1/9.

Method for preparing hydrogen

The present invention provides a nanowire production method that is simpler than conventional nanowire production methods, and that makes it easier to control the size and shape of the nanowires by using a technique completely different from the conventional ones. A powder particle containing a metal element is divided into nanometer-size wires containing the metal element by irradiating a suspension of the powder particles with a femtosecond laser. The present invention also makes it possible to divide the nanometer-size wires thus formed into nanometer-size particles containing the metal element by irradiating further the nanometer-size wires with the femtosecond laser.

A single pulse laser beam of linear polarization is irradiated to a glass region such that the condensing point is located inside of the glass region, thereby to form, at the condensing point, a periodic structure region in which high refractive-index zones and low refractive-index zones are repeatedly being generated at pitches of 1 &#x3bc;m or less. Planes in which the high refractive-index zones or the low refractive-index zones are being joined to one another, are formed in parallel to the polarized magnetic field direction of the pulse laser. It is therefore possible to prepare an optical structural body having a submicron-order fine periodic structure which can readily be produced.

There is provided a multi-cored fiber array for optical communication which has high dimensional accuracy, can easily be prepared by machining, and is low in cost. There is also provided a fiber array for optical communication which can reduce the necessary amount of an adhesive used for fixing optical fibers to a substrate. The fiber array for optical communication comprises: a substrate for inserting optical fibers therein; and a press plate for pressing and fixing the inserted optical fibers. The substrate has a plurality of grooves into which the optical fibers are to be inserted. The accuracy of the center-to-center dimension between the grooves adjacent to each other is within &#xb1;0.5 &#x3bc;m, and the degree of parallelization in the groove length direction between the grooves adjacent to each other is within &#xb1;0.1 degree.

Fiber array for optical communication and method of manufacturing the fiber array

An inorganic body containing rare earth and/or transition metal ions that has been irradiated with a pulsed laser beam in the manner such that a focal point of the pulsed laser beam is adjusted to an inner part of the inorganic body is disclosed. The inorganic body may be a glass or crystal containing one or more of oxide, halide and chalcogenide. The rare earth ion may be one or more of Ce, Nd, Pr, Sm, Eu, Tb, Dy, Tm, Tb. The transition metal ion may be one or more of Ti, Mn, Cr, V, Fe, Cu, Mo and Ru. When the focal point is relatively shifted with respect to the inorganic body, an ionic valence-changed domain is formed with a predetermined pattern at the inner part of the inorganic body. The pulsed laser beam preferably has a pulse width under a picosecond. The ionic valence change occurs at the focal point and its vicinity, but the rare earth or transition metal ion keeps its original valence at all other parts, so as to form a reformed domain with a predetermined pattern in the inorganic body. Since optical properties are selectively changed at the reformed domain, the processed inorganic body is useful as a functional device such as a memory device or a light-emitting device using the differentiated optical properties.

Method of selectively reforming an inner part of an inorganic body

A glass containing one or more of metal microparticles, semiconductor microparticles, transition metal ion, rare earth ion and anion with characteristic absorption in a wavelength region longer than 360 nm is irradiated with a pulsed laser beam condensed at a focal point preset in an inner part of the glass. The condensed irradiation induces change of a refractive index as well as decrease of characteristic absorption in the wavelength region longer than 360 nm at the focal point. Such the domain is continuously formed by relatively shifting the focal point with respect to the glass. The continuous domains serve as optical waveguides, since optical properties are greatly different between the irradiated part and the non-irradiated part.
