A scanning array (12) comprising a plurality of photosensor elements (12a) is reciprocated perpendicular to the axis (12b) thereof to scan a rectangular area of an original document (69). After scanning the area, the document (69) is moved parallel to the axis (12b) of the scanning array (12) and the scanning array (12) reciprocated again to scan a next rectangular area. This process is continued until the entire document (69) is scanned. The photosensor elements (12a) produce data signals corresponding to incident light from the document (69) which are fed serially into an orthogonal conversion memory (26) in the column direction. The data signals are read out of the memory (26) in the row direction and run length encoded for transmission. Received data signals are run length decoded and fed into the memory (26) in the row direction and read out of the memory (26) in the column direction. The received data signals are then applied to a printing array (24) of printing elements (24a) which is reciprocated relative to a sheet of paper (78) in the same pattern as the scanning array (12) to reproduce an image represented by the received data signals. The data signals are subjected to orthogonal conversion for transmission and to reverse orthogonal conversion for reception, thereby increasing the data compression efficiency.

A recording system including a recording head with multistyli movable in linear reciprocatory movement crosswise of a recording medium which itself is movable in a direction at right angles to the direction of linear reciprocatory movement of the carriage, and a drive circuit for applying high potentials to the selected styli including a diode matrix connected to the multistyli, and line-direction drivers and row-direction drivers connected to line-direction conductors and row-direction conductors respectively of the matrix. The carriage supports, in addition to the recording head, the diode matrix and the line-direction drivers and/or the row-direction drivers, so that the electrostatic capacity between wires connecting the drivers to the multistyli can be reduced and recording can be performed at high speed.

The facsimile transmission and reception apparatus comprises transportation means for originals and a recording paper transporation means, which are for transporting and positioning the original document and the recording paper substantially in the same width range normal to the movement direction of the original document and the recording paper, and the original document inserted, with an image information bearing side up, is transported substantially vertically from an upper position to a lower position.

Facsimile transmission and reception apparatus

A sheet of copy paper (24) is moved perpendicular to a linear array (22) of printing electrodes (221, 222, 223, 224 . . . ). The electrodes (221, 222, 223, 224 . . . ) are selectively energized to form an electrostatic charge pattern on the copy sheet (24) corresponding to one horizontal scan line of an original document. The electrostatic charge pattern is developed by a toner and the resulting toner image fixed to the copy sheet (24). The electrodes (221, 222, 223, 224 . . . ) are divided into a first set (221, 223, 225 . . . ) and a second set (222, 224, 226 . . . ), the electrodes in the second set (222, 224, 226 . . . ) being alternatingly spaced from the electrodes in the first set (221, 223, 225 . . . ) along the length of the array (22). The first set (221, 223, 225 . . . ) of electrodes are selectively energized during a first time period (t1) and the second set (222, 224, 226 . . . ) of electrodes are selectively energized during a subsequent second time period (t2). The second time period (t2) may be made longer than the first time period (t1) and/or a voltage (V2) applied to the second set (222, 224, 226 . . . ) of electrodes may be made higher than a voltage (V1) applied to the first set (221, 223, 225 . . . ) of electrodes.

A condenser device for lighting an original as used in a facsimile or copying machine incorporates an elliptical or similar reflecting mirror. A light shield associated with a light source is provided with a pair of reflecting surfaces, one of which directs light incident thereon from the light source onto the elliptical reflecting mirror and thence to the other surface for reflection to a slitwise area to be scanned where it is combined with light following a direct path including the light source and the mirror.
