An each area automatic selection receiver of an emergency radio signal is an emergency broadcast receiver which enables current area code CAC to be updated automatically. This receiver is constituted in such a way that a GPS receiver obtains current position information by use of the satellite positioning system, then, a converter converts the current position information into an area code by use of a conversion table to write the area code into a code memory. For that reason, even though the receiver moves anywhere, contents of the code memory are always updated to an area code of an area of the movement destination automatically. Therefore, emergency broadcast of the area is always capable of being received correctly.

Programmable scanner

A device, which is adapted to be connected to an electronic apparatus, is capable of having a non-rechargeable battery pack or a rechargeable battery pack connected thereto. The battery packs supply a driving voltage to the electronic apparatus when connected to the device. The device can have an external power source attached thereto for energizing the electronic apparatus by a DC voltage, for disabling the driving voltage supplied by the battery packs and for supplying a charging voltage to the device and to the rechargeable battery pack. The device automatically discriminates between the rechargeable battery pack and the non-rechargeable battery pack so that the charging voltage from the external power source is only applied to the rechargeable battery pack and not to the non-rechargeable battery pack. The rechargeable battery pack includes a casing having a positive electrode and a negative electrode mounted thereon and a non-conductive insulating member which is connected to the casing. The insulating member extends outwardly from the casing a predetermined distance such that when the rechargeable battery pack is placed on a surface, the insulating member contacts the surface and prevents the electrodes from contacting the surface. A gap is provided between the electrodes on the rechargeable battery pack in which the non-conductive insulating member is provided.

A telephone answering apparatus permits a called party to select between an automatic mode wherein a message is automatically played back to a caller without any action of the called party and a prenouncer mode wherein a message is played back to the caller when activated by the called party. The telephone answering apparatus includes a ring detector circuit connectable to an outside line and responsive to an incoming call on the outside line for producing a ring detected signal, a timer and driver circuit responsive to the ring detected signal for producing a playback signal and a manually actuatable answer switch. A mode switch capable of selecting one of the prenouncer mode and the automatic mode is connected to the timer and driver circuit, to the ring detector circuit and to the answer switch.

A digital image exchange system comprises a data transmission line, at least one video RAM, at least one video signal generator for accessing data from the video RAM and for developing at least two video signals corresponding respectively to the accessed data, and at least one modulator for modulating the video signals to form transmitted signals in at least two different frequency bands to be transmitted on the data transmission line. At least one demodulator is coupled to the transmission line at a location remote from the modulator for demodulating the transmitted signals in each of the at least two frequency bands to form at least two corresponding video signals; and at least one video display device is operatively coupled with the demodulator for displaying visual images corresponding to the respective video signals.

A radio receiver includes a noise blanking system comprising a switching circuit in the signal path which is responsive to a blanking signal for preventing passage of signals. A blanking signal producing circuit is in the signal path ahead of the switching circuit and is responsive to predetermined noise signals received by the radio receiver for producing the blanking signal. The receiver also includes an AGC circuit for producing a gain control signal and a signal strength meter coupled for response to the gain control signal. A linearity control system comprises a current controlling circuit responsive to a meter control signal for controlling the current flow through the meter so as to increase the range of linear response of the meter. A signalling circuit is coupled with the AGC circuit and with the current controlling circuit and is responsive to the gain control signal for producing the meter control signal. A tuning system for the receiver comprises a first local oscillator responsive to first oscillator control signals for varying the frequency of first oscillator signals over a first range at first increments. A second local oscillator normally produces a second oscillator signal at a fixed frequency. A frequency varying circuit is coupled with the second oscillator and responsive to second oscillator control signals for varying the frequency of the second oscillator signals over a second range at second increments which are smaller than the first increments. A control circuit produces the first and second oscillator control signals.

A removable rod antenna comprises a first fitting for rigidly coupling to a radio body; an elongate rod-like antenna body; a second fitting of complementary configuration for engaging the first fitting, and a retaining arrangement for holding the second fitting in captive relation on the antenna. Respective mating fastener portions are defined respectively on the first and second fittings for removably engaging each other in electrically conductive contact to thereby removably mount the antenna body to the radio body in electrically conductive contact with the first fitting thereon.
