A heat treatment apparatus includes: a furnace core tube made of silica glass; a heater provided adjacent to the furnace core tube, the heater heating a heating region; and a moving mechanism supporting a porous glass base material and relatively moving the porous glass base material with respect to the heater in the furnace core tube in a state where the heating region is heated by the heater to make the porous glass base material pass through the heating region. The heat treatment apparatus includes a thin-walled part provided in a region adjacent to a portion located in the heating region in the furnace core tube, the thin-walled part having a thickness of glass less than that of the portion located in the heating region.

A sintering apparatus for sintering a porous glass base material, including a furnace core tube surrounded by heaters, the furnace core tube housing the porous glass base material; a lid member having an insertion hole through which a holding rod coupled with the porous glass base material is inserted, the lid member mounted at one end of the furnace core tube; a sealing chamber having a supply port that introduces seal gas and a discharging port that discharges the seal gas, the sealing chamber provided at the lid member covering the insertion hole; and a cylindrical member that causes a pressure difference between gas inside of the tube of an inside the furnace core tube and gas inside of the sealing chamber to be generated while the holding rod is inserted through the cylindrical member inside of the sealing chamber.

A sintering apparatus heat-treats a porous glass preform for an optical fiber at a high temperature. The sintering apparatus includes: a glass preform elevating/lowering mechanism; a furnace core tube having an upper part having an opening part into which the glass preform is inserted by the elevating/lowering mechanism, and made of quartz glass; a heating furnace disposed on an outer circumference of the furnace core tube; an upper lid for closing the opening part of the furnace core tube; and a sealing member holding mechanism included in the upper lid and configured to hold a sealing member interposed between the opening part and the upper lid.

The present invention provides an apparatus for sintering a glass preform for an optical fiber, wherein the glass preform for the optical fiber is received in a muffle tube and is heated in an atmospheric gas while being suspended on a shaft and supported thereon, the apparatus comprising: a first gas seal that is provided at an upper end of the muffle tube, the shaft being inserted therethrough; a buffering chamber that is provided above the first gas seal and that covers the shaft; a second gas seal that is provided at an upper end of the buffering chamber, the shaft being inserted therethrough; and a unit that introduces the atmospheric gas exhausted from the muffle tube into the buffering chamber.

A plasma display panelof the present invention has a protective filmover a sustaining electrodeand a scanning electrodewith the main components of the protective film being CaO and SrO, and the concentration of the CaO in the protective filmis 20 mol % or more and 90 mol % or less. This protective filmhas a smaller work function than a conventional MgO film so light can be emitted at a lower discharge voltage than in the past. If the discharge voltage is lower, the protective filmwill be sputtered more slowly so that the service life of the plasma display panelwill be longer. Also, since the plasma-gas contains xenon gas, the plasma display panel of the present invention has higher brightness.
