Provided is a magnetic recording medium including: a support body; a base layer containing carbon particle powder and metal-containing particle powder; and a recording layer. In a recording surface, a maximum indentation depth h is 85≤h≤140, and a ratio d of a permanent strain to an elastic recovery (permanent strain/elastic recovery) is 0.95≤d≤1.25.

Magnetic recording medium

A magnetic recording medium that can exhibit good traveling performance during use is provided. This magnetic recording medium is a tape-shaped magnetic recording medium, and includes a substrate, a base layer disposed on the substrate, and a magnetic layer disposed on the base layer. The substrate includes a polyester as a main component. The average thickness of the base layer is 0.9 &#x3bc;m or less. The base layer and the magnetic layer each include a lubricant. The magnetic layer has a surface having a large number of holes, and the arithmetic average roughness Ra of the surface is 2.5 nm or less. The BET specific surface area of the entire magnetic recording medium is 3.5 m/g or more in a state where the lubricant has been removed from the magnetic recording medium and the magnetic recording medium has been dried. The squareness ratio in the perpendicular direction is 65% or more. The average thickness of the magnetic layer is 90 nm or less. The average thickness of the magnetic recording medium is 5.6 &#x3bc;m or less.

To provide a magnetic recording medium that has excellent traveling stability in spite of having a thin total thickness and a thin thickness of an underlayer, and is suitable for use in a recording/reproducing device for adjusting the width of the magnetic recording medium by adjusting a tension of the magnetic recording medium in a longitudinal direction thereof. The present technology provides a tape-shaped magnetic recording medium including: a magnetic layer; an underlayer; a base layer; and a back layer, in which the underlayer has a thickness of 0.5 &#x3bc;m or more and 0.9 &#x3bc;m or less, the magnetic recording medium has an average thickness tof 5.6 &#x3bc;m or less, the magnetic recording medium includes a lubricant, the magnetic recording medium has pores, and the pores have an average diameter of 6 nm or more and 11 nm or less when the diameters of the pores are measured in a state where the lubricant has been removed from the magnetic recording medium and the magnetic recording medium has been dried, and the Young's modulus in a longitudinal direction is 7.90 GPa or less.

A tape-like magnetic recording medium includes a reinforced substrate, and a recording layer arranged on the reinforced substrate, and the reinforced substrate includes a substrate that has a first face and a second face opposed to each other, and has an average thickness of 4 &#x3bc;m or smaller, and a metal layer that contains cobalt, arranged on the first face, the reinforced substrate by itself causing thereon a depth of indentation of 0.25 &#x3bc;m or shallower, when a 0.7-mm-diameter hard sphere is impressed against the second face under 5.0 gf load for 10 seconds.
