Provided are a polymerizing liquid-crystalline compound of formula (1). In formula (1), Qto Qeach independently represent a formula (2), a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group or the like; at least two of Qto Qare a formula (2) and may differ from each other. In formula (2), A independently represent a 1,4-cyclohexylene group, a 1,4-phenylene group or the like; X independently represents a single bond, an alkylene group or the like; Z represents a single bond, &#x2014;COO&#x2014;, &#x2014;OCO&#x2014; or the like; n indicates an integer of from 0 to 3; p represents any one polymerizing group of formulae (P1) to (P8); W represents a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group or the like. When Qand Qare both hydrogen atoms and when Qand Qare both formula (2), then p must not be (P8).

Polymerizing binaphthalene derivatives

Provided is a liquid-crystalline, polymerizable vinyl ketone compound of formula (1): Preferably, Ris hydrogen, halogen, &#x2014;CN, &#x2014;CF, &#x2014;CFH, &#x2014;CFH, &#x2014;OCF, &#x2014;OCFH, or alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxyalkyl or alkenyl having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms; R, Rand Rare hydrogen; Ato Aare independently 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-cyclohexenylene or 1,4-phenylene where any hydrogen may be substituted with halogen; Zto Zare independently a single bond, &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, &#x2014;CH&#x2550;CH&#x2014;, &#x2014;CF&#x2550;CF&#x2014;, &#x2014;OCF&#x2014; or &#x2014;CFO&#x2014;; Zis a single bond, &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014; or &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;; m, n and q are independently 0, 1 or 2. The uppermost temperature of the liquid crystalline phase of the compound is high, and the compound has good compatibility with other compounds and has the necessary characteristics such as optical anisotropy. Also provided are a polymer having many good characteristics of transparency, mechanical strength, coatability, solubility, crystallinity, shrinkage, water permeability, water absorption, melting point, glass transition point, clearing point and chemical resistance; an optically-anisotropic material of the polymer; a liquid-crystal display device that comprises the polymer; and a method for producing the liquid-crystalline compound.

Liquid-crystalline vinyl ketone derivatives and their polymers

The compound (1) having 2,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,4-phenylene is stable chemically and has excellent miscibility with other liquid crystal compounds, large and negative dielectric anisotropy and proper optical anisotropy. A liquid crystal composition comprising the compound has large specific resistance and a large voltage holding ratio, and that the composition is useful for a liquid crystal display element. The compound (1) is represented by formula (1):Ra&#xe00c;A&#x2014;Z)&#x2014;(A&#x2014;Z&#xe00d;&#x2014;A&#x2014;Z&#x2014;A&#x2014;Rb&#x2003;&#x2003;(1)wherein Ra and Rb independently are alkyl having 1 to 20 carbons, any &#x2014;CH&#x2014; in the alkyl may be replaced by &#x2014;O&#x2014;, &#x2014;S&#x2014;, &#x2014;CH&#x2550;CH&#x2014;, or &#x2014;C&#x2261;C&#x2014;, and any hydrogen may be replaced by halogen; A, A, A, and Aindependently are 1,4-cyclohexylene, 1,4-cyclohexenylene, 1,3-dioxane-2,5-diyl, 1,4-phenylene, pyridine-2,5-diyl, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl, pyridazine-3,6-diyl, or 2,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,4-phenylene, any hydrogen in these rings may be replaced by halogen, and at least one of A, A, A, and Ais 2,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,4-phenylene; Z, Zand Zindependently are a single bond, &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, &#x2014;(CF)&#x2014;, &#x2014;COO&#x2014;, &#x2014;OCO&#x2014;, &#x2014;CHO&#x2014;, &#x2014;OCH&#x2014;, &#x2014;CFO&#x2014;, &#x2014;OCF&#x2014;, &#x2014;CH&#x2550;CH&#x2014;, &#x2014;CF&#x2550;CF&#x2014;, &#x2014;C&#x2261;C&#x2014;, &#x2014;(CH)&#x2014;, &#x2014;(CH)O&#x2014;, or &#x2014;O(CH)&#x2014;; m and n independently are 0 or 1.
