A flowmeter including a sensor passage disposed with a sensor chip for measuring a flow rate and an orifice passage as a bypass passage placed with respect to the sensor passage is provided. The orifice passage has a passage diameter which is smaller than a passage diameter of an inflow passage, a distribution orifice is placed on an inlet side of the sensor passage, and the orifice passage and the distribution orifice are configured such that changing trends in an effective sectional area becomes same in a graph including a vertical axis indicating the effective sectional area and a lateral axis indicating a fluid pressure of a fluid.

According to the present invention, electrorheological fluid is deaerated after it is sealed in a closed device which is operated by the electrorheological fluid. Thus, it is possible to control the operation of the closed device in accordance with an electric field. Additionally, the control of viscosity is not affected by repetitive operations of the closed device, thereby obtaining a closed device having a smooth operation and good repeatability. The deaeration is achieved under a predetermined reduced pressure, for example, of not more than 100 torr. In addition thereto, a suitable heating process is carried out as required.

Method for deaerating electrorheological fluid in a closed device

A control apparatus for an electroviscous fluid has a pair of electrodes between which the electroviscous fluid is disposed and a control device for applying nearly-trapezoidal shaped pulses positive and negative voltages alternately across the electrodes to control viscosity of the electroviscous fluid. The control apparatus changes gradually a voltage value when switching between the positive voltage and the negative voltage.
