A non-aqueous secondary battery of the present invention includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode and a non-aqueous electrolyte. The positive electrode includes a positive electrode material mixture layer containing a lithium-containing transition metal oxide. The negative electrode includes a negative electrode material mixture layer and a porous layer containing an insulating material unreactive with lithium formed thereon. The negative electrode material mixture layer includes a negative electrode material including a core and a carbon covering layer covering a surface of the core. The core includes a material containing silicon and oxygen at an atomic ratio x of the oxygen to the silicon of 0.5&#x2266;&#xd7;&#x2266;1.5. The material containing silicon and oxygen has a peak at least in a range of 1850 to 1860 eV in an X-ray absorption near edge structure spectrum at the K absorption edge of Si in a state in which discharge of the battery is finished.

Lithium-containing composite oxide and nonaqueous secondary cell using the same, and method for manufacturing the same

A lithium-containing complex oxide represented by General Formula: LiNiMnMO(where 0&#x2266;x&#x2266;0.15, &#x2212;0.05&#x2266;x+&#x3b1;&#x2266;0.2, 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.4; &#x2212;0.1&#x2266;&#x3b4;&#x2266;0.1 (when 0&#x2266;y&#x2266;0.2) or &#x2212;0.24&#x2266;&#x3b4;&#x2266;0.24 (when 0.2&#x3c;y&#x2266;0.4); and M is at least one element selected from the group consisting of Mg, Ti, Cr, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Al, Ge, Zr and Sn) is provided. The lithium-containing complex oxide contains secondary particles formed of flocculated primary particles. The primary particles have a mean particle diameter of 0.3 to 3 &#x3bc;m, and the secondary particles have a mean particle diameter of 5 to 20 &#x3bc;m. By using this lithium-containing complex oxide as a positive active material, a non-aqueous secondary battery having a high capacity, excellent cycle durability and excellent storage characteristics at a high temperature is achieved.
