In a printer of the invention, a plurality of head units each including a line thermal head having heat-generating elements arranged in a direction orthogonal to a conveying direction of a recording paper are arranged in the conveying direction of the recording paper. The head unit has an angle-adjusting mechanism that adjusts the angle between the conveying direction of the recording paper, and the arranging direction of the heat-generating elements, and a position-adjusting mechanism that slidingly moves thermal head in the arranging direction of the heat-generating elements. An angle-adjusting screw of the angle-adjusting mechanism and a position-adjusting screw of the position-adjusting mechanism are disposed at an external surface of the head unit, which is orthogonal to the line thermal head.

A printer prevents color smear when a paper roll mounted on the printer is initially fed. The printer includes a plurality of printing units each having a thermal head and an ink ribbon, and a platen roller having an outer surface opposite the plurality of printing units. The platen roller can be rotated by a stepping motor. A printing medium is arranged on a roll at the most upstream side of the delivery path. A printed result of a predetermined printing length is obtained by sequentially transferring an ink to the printing medium from the upstream to the downstream printing units in an overlapping manner. The electrification period of the thermal head in each printing unit is controlled on the basis of an amount of rotation of the platen roller.

A reading apparatus and a recording apparatus having the reading apparatus which can reduce storage capacity for storing read data and, because the read data processing modes can be switched according to the type of documents to be processed, perform fast and proper document reading operation. If a document to be processed is an image document, the controller operates in the image processing mode in which M pieces of read data are sampled out of N pieces of read data and a mean value of the M pieces of read data is calculated to be stored in the memory as gradation data of one pixel. If the document is a text document, the controller operates in the text processing mode in which read data of one read unit of the image scanner is digitized by a threshold to be stored in the memory. A thermal printer capable of producing labels, in addition to printing on normal paper. The printer includes a switching unit for switching between a label making mode and a normal printing mode. In the label making mode, characters are printed onto a receptor tape using a special label-making ink ribbon cassette. In the normal printing mode, a normal ink ribbon cassette is substituted for the special label-making cassette.

The present invention relates to a label creation cassette capable of creating a label when mounted on a thermal printer used as an output unit for personal computers and wordprocessors. A cassette case 1 with a substantially rectangular surface includes substantially cylindrical cores 2a, 2b, 2c each rotatably supported therein. An image transfer tape 3 is wound around the core 2a of these three cores. Further, a thermal transfer ink ribbon 4 is wound around one of the remaining two cores or the core 2b and the other core 2c is used to wind the ink ribbon 4.
