An image display device includes: an optical unit that generates image display light based on an image signal; a projection unit that projects the image display light generated by the optical unit; and a combiner that presents a virtual image by reflecting the image display light projected from the projection unit. The projection unit includes: a first wave plate that converts linearly-polarized image display light emitted from an image display element into circularly-polarized image display light; a diffuser plate that diffuses the circularly-polarized image display light emitted from the first wave plate; a second wave plate that converts the circularly-polarized image display light diffused by the diffuser plate into linearly-polarized image display light; and a polarization plate that transmits the linearly-polarized image display light emitted from the second wave plate.

Image display device

An display apparatus, for a vehicle, according to one embodiment includes a substrate housing portion, an optical unit, a turning member, and a plate-like attachment plate. The substrate housing portion contains a circuit substrate for outputting an image signal of an image to be displaced. The optical unit generates an image based on the image signal outputted from the circuit substrate and projects the generated image. The combiner is provided at one end of the optical unit, and the image is projected onto the combiner. The turning member connects the optical unit to the substrate housing portion in a freely rotatable manner. The plate-like attachment plate is used to mount the substrate housing portion to a rear-view mirror such that the optical unit is freely rotatable without coming into contact with the rear-view mirror inside a vehicle.

Display apparatus for vehicle

A beam, expansion unit is configured to expand a beam of laser light emitted from a laser light source into an ellipse. A beam irradiation position moving unit is configured to translate a mirror by a driving unit to sequentially move the laser light expanded into the ellipse on the surface of an integrator in a minor-axis direction of the ellipse. A reflective liquid crystal device is configured to modulate the laser light. A projection lens is configured to project the laser light modulated by the reflective liquid crystal device.

Projection-type display apparatus having a laser light source

An integrator includes a plurality of rectangular lens cells arranged in a direction x and a direction y. Laser light emitted from a laser source is projected onto an integrator. A beam irradiation position moving unit is configured to cause the laser light to scan the surface of the integrator in the directions x and y so that the laser light is sequentially projected onto a plurality of lens cells. A reflective liquid crystal device is configured to modulate the laser light emitted from the integrator. A projection lens is configured to project the laser light modulated by the reflective liquid crystal device.

Projection-type display apparatus

A distribution-type compensator has an in-plane retardation of 18 nm&#xb1;5 nm in a rectangular effective region with a long side and a short side. The slow axis direction of the distribution-type compensator changes continuously in a plane of the effective region and an angle difference between slow axis directions at any two positions in the effective region has a maximum value in a range of 10 degrees to 30 degrees. The distribution-type compensator is mounted to a projection-type display apparatus.
