A method and apparatus are provided to process collected sand. This method and apparatus allow the moisture content to be adjusted and the addition of a binder to be facilitated to renew the collected sand as casting sand for future use. Also, defective castings are prevented when they are made by a main mold using the renewed casting sand. The sand-collecting means can be compact. The method is performed and the apparatus is operated by separating a main mold of green sand, after casting is conducted, into parts unaffected and affected by the molten metal heat, adjusting the moisture content of the part unaffected by molten metal heat for use as facing sand in the next main mold making, and adding a binder and adjusting the moisture content of the part affected by the molten metal heat for use as back sand in making the next main mold.

Collected sand processing method

Given green sand is obtained by a mixing operation that is carried out for a short period of time. Discarded sand is supplied as supplementary sand to a sand processing line, so that molding sand can be recycled. Green sand for a molding is used for facing sand or the pocket sand. Bentonite-covered sand is made by mixing reproduced sand, new sand, and discarded sand or any or all of them. The bentonite-covered sand is added to collected sand to supplement it. Also, the bentonite-covered sand is mixed with water, and used for facing sand or the pocket sand.

Method for making sand covered with bentonite, the sand, and a method for recycling molding sand for a mold using the sand covered by bentonite

The apparatus comprises a table (5), on which a pattern plate (6) is attached, a flask (7), the bottom surface of which can be fitted to the pattern plate (6), a filling frame (30), the bottom surface of which can be fitted to the upper surface of the flask (7), and in which the highest part of its opening is smaller than the lowest part of its opening, a blow head (17), which is used for blowing in molding sand, and for squeezing the blown-in molding sand, and which is placed above the table (5), and a thin plate body (20), which can be inserted into the blown-in molding sand and which is placed around a sand holder (12) that is a part of the blow head (17), in which the highest part of the opening of the filling frame (30) has such a size that the outer surface of the thin plate body (20) can contact the inner surface of the highest part of the filling frame (30), and in which the size and shape of the lowest part of the opening of the filling frame (30) are the same as those of the opening of the flask (7).

Apparatus for making mold

A first quantity of all the molding sand necessary to produce a mold is fed in the mold space, the first quantity being one of at least two parts divided from the total molding sand. The mold space is evacuated and then air is introduced into the mold space at the air-pressure rising rate of 30--to 500 kg/cm.sup.2 /sec. Another quantity of the molding sand is fed into the mold space, the mold space is evacuated and then air is introduced into the mold space at the air-pressure rising rate of 30--to 500 kg/cm.sup.2 /sec. The apparatus includes a sand passage through which each quantity of sand is fed into the mold space, and a gate for closing the sand passage thereby closing the mold space to allow the mold space to be evacuated and then subjected to a pressure increase.

Molding sand filled in a space defined by a pattern plate and a flask is pre-compacted before the molding sand is completely pressed. A pre-compacting member is inserted into the molding sand toward the pattern plate, and then is stopped based on a predetermined depth of the pre-compacting member in the molding sand or a predetermined pressure caused by the pre-compacting member in the molding sand.

Method and apparatus for pre-compacting molding sand

A method and apparatus is provided for increasing the packing density and strength of sand for gas-hardening casting molds. The method is characterized by the steps of filling spaces defined by a pattern plate 1 and a mold frame with gas-hardening casting sand 4, depressurizing a closed container 3 after the filled assembly has been conveyed thereinto, introducing air into the container 3, applying a pressure to the upper surface of the casting sand to increase its packing density, and hardening the casting sand by a hardening gas.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing gas-hardened molds

An apparatus to produce a shell-like mold by vacuum sucking molding sand into a shell-like cavity defined by a cope and a drag is disclosed. The apparatus includes a drag and a cope mounted on the drag so that they define a shell-like cavity between them. The drag holds on its upper surface a pattern. The drag has a plurality of sucking apertures at places adjacent to the perimeter of the pattern. The sucking apertures communicate with a vacuum source. The cope has a single molding-sand-supplying bore which communicates with the cavity. To produce a shell-like mold, the molding sand is introduced from the bore into the cavity by means of a vacuum source.

Apparatus and method for producing shell-like molds

A method of filling a core cavity, wherein the entire core cavity is uniformly filled with highly compacted sand for molding the core without the need of providing many ventholes. The method is characterized in that sand for molding the core is drawn into the core cavity through an inlet to preparatorily fill the cavity, and then the thus prepared sand is repeatedly and sequentially compacted by impulsively pressurizing the sand, starting with the sand farthest from the inlet and ending with the sand nearest to the inlet.

Method of making cores with molding sand

A method for connecting a plurality of cores in an assembly through adjacent surfaces of the adjacent cores is disclosed. This method includes the steps of: (a) forming a plurality of cavities between adjacent surfaces of two adjacent cores, the plurality of cavities being horizontally aligned and spaced apart along the adjacent surfaces; (b) arranging the plurality of cores in a row; (c) filling a hopper nozzle with a predetermined amount of connecting sand; (d) indexing the hopper nozzle above one of the cavities; (e) supplying compressed air into the hopper nozzle that contains the connecting sand, thereby projecting and charging the mass of the connecting sand from the hopper nozzle into the cavity; and (f) repeating steps (c), (d), and (e).

Method for connecting cores by charging connecting sand into them

Cores have a plurality of cavities defined by adjacent vertical side surfaces of two adjacent cores. These cavities are arranged horizontally and spaced apart along the surfaces. Providing such a plurality of cavities in the surfaces produces an increased total surface area extending in the direction where the cores mate or separate.

Cores formed with connecting cavities for receiving connecting sand

The machine includes a lifter table for lifting a pattern plate and flask which hold molding sand and a pre-compacting member and a pressing member disposed above the lifter table for horizontal movement and for being inserted into the flask when the lifter table lifts the flask. The pre-compacting member includes a thin-plate body to be positioned slightly spaced apart from an inner surface of the flask or inner and outer surfaces of a pattern when inserted into the molding sand held in the flask. The pressing member includes a squeezing body that presses the molding sand from above.

Molding machine

Molding sand (S) is put in a mold space defined by a pattern plate (2), having a pattern (2A) on it, and a flask (3). The apparatus includes a thin-plate body (9) and/or a rod (11) to be inserted into the molding sand. It is pre-compacted at a part of it near the inner and outer surfaces of the pattern (2A) and the inner surfaces of the flask (3) by the thin-plate body and rod. The apparatus also has a pressing plate (8) to press all the molding sand after it is pre-compacted.
