An apparatus for controlling the timing of fuel injection into a diesel engine, including means for computing a target time at which injection should occur and means for sensing when injection actually occurs, with respect to a reference crankshaft position, feedback control means for adjusting the actual injection time to bring this into coincidence with the target injection time, means for sensing when firing of fuel within an engine cylinder actually occurs and for computing a target firing time based on the current operating status of the engine. A compensation factor is computed based on the difference between the actual and target firing times, and is utilized to modify the actual fuel injection time such as to bring the actual and target firing times into coincidence. Means are included for judging whether the engine operating status will permit reliable firing time data to be acquired, and for selectively enabling and inhibiting computation of successive new values of compensation factor based on this judgement.

A high-pressure fluid control solenoid valve assembly for use with a spill type fuel injection pump of an internal combustion engine, comprises an actuator portion (101) including a solenoid (8, 9), a stator (7) and an armature (14), and a valve portion (102) including a pilot valve (40, 41) and a main valve (42, 43) where the valve portion (102) is spaced apart from the actuator portion (101) and is responsive to the movement of the armature (14) via a rod (14) connected to the armature (14) and extends axially in a bore of the stator (7) which is cylindrical hollow. The pilot valve (40, 41) is coaxial with and telescopically received in the main valve (42, 43) so that two fluid chambers (54, 51) are formed inside and outside, respectively a spool (42) of the main valve such that the main valve is continuously kept closed irrespective of the fluid pressure in these chambers as long as the pilot valve is closed. The pilot valve comprises a needle (40) which is arranged to be pressed by the rod (13) to close the pilot valve on energization of the solenoid (8, 9), where the needle (40) is normally biased in valve-opening direction. On deenergization, the pilot valve opens causing the main valve to spill fuel thus terminating the fuel injection.

A piezoelectric actuator comprises a housing having an inside cavity in which is mounted a column of piezoelectric elements having interleaved electrodes. The column of piezoelectric elements is mounted within a sealed enclosure which divides the inside cavity of the housing into an inner space receiving the column of piezoelectric elements and an outer space. The inner space is filled with a flowable, electrically insulative, thermally conductive material such as silicone oil held in direct contact with and in a heat transfer relationship with the column of piezoelectric elements. The silicone oil serves to isolate the column of piezoelectric elements and the electrodes from moisture and other foreign materials that would otherwise affect an insulation breakdown voltage. A cooling liquid is adapted to be circulated through the outer space surrounding the enclosure to absorb heat transferred thereto from the column of piezoelectric elements through the flowable thermally conducting material. The piezoelectric actuator may be incorporated with a fuel injection nozzle to form a pump injector which pressurizes and injects fuel at each energization of the column of piezoelectric elements.

In a fuel injection apparatus for an internal combustion engine, the fuel injection is ended by a spill mechanism provided in a spill passage communicating with a pumping chamber. A piston opening and closing the spill passage is a free piston, and a solenoid valve to open and close a cylinder in which the free piston is disposed, is also provided. As the solenoid valve closes the cylinder, the free piston closes the spill passage, thus enabling the fuel feed to the fuel injection valve. When the solenoid valve opens the cylinder, the free piston opens the spill passage. Thus, the fuel flows through the spill passage to the fuel reservoir.

Fuel injection apparatus

A fuel injection pump of the distribution type is provided with an electromagnetic valve for escaping the fuel in the pump chamber of the fuel injection pump. The fuel injection pump is also provided with a sensor for detecting the rotary angle of a pump shaft. This sensor is attached to a roller ring of a converter mechanism which also comprises a face cam, for example, and which also serves to convert the rotation of the pump shaft the reciprocate with that of a pump plunger. The sensor generates signals which represent the rotary angles of the pump shaft. The operation of the electromagnetic valve is controlled to escape the fuel in the pump chamber, depending upon the signals supplied from the sensor.

A spill port for discharging fuel is provided in a wall defining a high pressure chamber defined in a fuel injection pump, and capable of being successively communicated with respective cylinders. Opening and closing of this spill port is controlled by a solenoid valve. A fuel injection time period is calculated, pressure in a high pressure chamber is detected by a pressure sensor to obtain a fuel injection starting time, and the fuel injection time period thus calculated is added to the fuel injection starting time to obtain a fuel injection ending time. The solenoid valve is actuated to open the spill port at this fuel injection ending time, whereby the fuel in the high pressure chamber is discharged so that fuel injection is discontinued. The respective operations described above may be controlled by a microcomputer.

An internal combustion engine comprising a secondary air feed control device for feeding secondary air into the exhaust passage from the air pump. The amount of the secondary air fed into the exhaust passage is controlled by the output signal of an oxygen concentration detector arranged in the exhaust passage. An air-fuel ratio control device is arranged in the main fuel passage of the carburetor for controlling the amount of air bled into the main fuel passage in response to the output signal of the oxygen concentration detector. The amount of the air bled into the main fuel passage is increased as the altitude becomes higher so as to reduce the difference between the stoichiometric air-fuel ratio and an air-fuel ratio of the mixture formed by the carburetor.
