A carriage device includes a first guide member and a second guide member for supporting a carriage with a head mounted thereon at two separate positions and guiding reciprocation of the carriage, a first adjustment unit configured to adjust a height of the carriage relative to the first guide member through movement of the carriage, and a second adjustment unit configured to adjust a height of the carriage relative to the second guide member through the movement of the carriage. The carriage device can sequentially perform a first operation of changing the height of the carriage by the first adjustment unit and a second operation of changing the height of the carriage by the second adjustment unit.

For each of a plurality of areas in at least one of a sheet width direction and a sheet conveying direction included in a sheet trailing edge area during printing on a first surface, information regarding an ink application amount to the area is acquired. According to a combination of acquired pieces of information regarding the ink application amounts to the plurality of areas, waiting time until a printing start on a second surface from an end of printing in the sheet trailing edge area is determined.

A motor control method performed by a controller includes monitoring a motor load of at least one of a plurality of motors including a first motor and a second motor driven by one common power source having a protection circuit, wherein the protection circuit is operated to shut down the power source in a case where a current value of the power source continues to exceed a threshold during a period Tg, and stopping motor drive in a case where the monitored motor load continues to exceed the threshold during a period Tn, which is shorter than the period Tg. In addition, monitoring of the motor load is skipped during acceleration operations of the first motor and the second motor when both the first motor and the second motor are driven, and then monitoring of the motor load is restarted.

A printing device that prints on media held in a tray includes a first roller section including a first conveyance roller; a second roller section including a second conveyance roller and a pinch roller; and a printing section provided between the first and the second roller sections. Printing is performed on the top surface of the media in the printing section while the tray is being conveyed by the first and the second roller sections. The tray is such that friction surfaces having a coefficient of friction that is higher than that of the other portions of the tray are formed in portions that come in contact with the first conveyance roller when the tray is taken in by the first roller section and the tip end of the tray advances to a gripping section between the second conveyance roller and the pinch roller.

A printing apparatus according to the present invention includes a feeding unit, a conveying unit, a printing unit, and a control unit. The control unit performs a successive feeding operation. An operating state of the feeding unit changes between a first operating state and a second operating state in which a feeding stop is more unstable than that in the first operating state, in a period from a start of feeding a printing medium until the printing medium reaches the conveying unit. In the successive feeding operation, a subsequent printing medium is fed without stopping until a leading end of the subsequent printing medium reaches a stoppable position. The stoppable position is arranged on an upstream side of the conveying unit. The subsequent printing medium can be stopped in the first operating state at the stoppable position.

Sheet feeding apparatus, and recording apparatus and reading apparatus comprising same

Ridges and grooves are alternately formed on a platen in the direction of transporting sheets. Wave holding spurs are rotatably supported by torsion springs downstream of a recording area, and pressed against the grooves. Sheet discharge roller pairs are disposed generally downstream from the grooves. Recording sheets exhibit cockling which rises up toward a recording head due to swelling from ink, but a substantial amount of the swelling is contained in the grooves, so the cockling does not come into contact with the recording head, and further, the peak-to-peak distance of the wave shapes of the recording sheets can be reduced. Following the leading edge of a recording sheet passing the sheet discharge roller pairs, the crests of the cockling are collapsed by transporting spurs and divided between wave holding spurs and the transporting spurs, and thus the peak-to-peak distance is further reduced, consequently preventing off-target landing of ink droplets.

A sheet S is pinched and conveyed by a metal driving roller having roughness provide on its surface and a pinch roller coming in pressure contact with the driving roller and thereby driven to rotate. And the pinch roller is formed of synthetic resin, so that the pinch roller can be manufactured less costly and the durability of the same can be increased.

An ink jet recording apparatus, which records with deposition of ink droplets onto a recording medium by use of an ink jet recording head, includes a platen for supporting a recording medium in a position facing the ink jet recording head, a plurality of carrier roller pairs for nipping and carrying the recording medium to the position of ink deposition by the ink jet recording head and extrusions extended in the carrying direction of the recording medium with respect to the platen and arranged in the direction intersecting the carrying direction of the recording medium to support the reverse side of recording medium. The carrier roller pairs are positioned on each of the extended lines of the extrusions on the upstream side relative to carrying direction of the recording medium. With the structure thus arranged, the floating of a recording medium from the platen can be suppressed so as to allow the gap to be formed narrower between the recording medium and recording head, hence making it possible to perform recording in higher quality.

An ink jet recording apparatus using an ink jet recording head for recording by discharging ink onto a recording medium arranged in a recording area includes a device for feeding the recording medium. The feeding device is arranged along the recording area and is provided with a mechanism to provide an irregular configuration of the recording medium in the direction intersecting the feeding direction thereof. This minimizes each individual cockling that may take place due to the permeation of ink into the recording medium when images are recorded thereon by the ink jet recording apparatus, and also, orientates the cockling downward reliably in order to prevent the recording medium from being in contact with the recording head to obtain a good quality of recorded images.

Ink jet recording apparatus

An ink jet recording apparatus has an ink recording region and an electrostatic attraction device. The ink recording region is located at a position spaced from an ink jet recording head. The electrostatic attraction is arranged at an opposite side to a surface of a recording medium to be recorded, in the ink recording region. The has a plurality of first regions and second regions which are alternately distributed. The first regions electrostatically attract the recording medium in the ink recording region relatively strongly and the second regions attract the recording medium relatively weakly. The electrostatic attraction serves to minimize the effects of cockling and that assures stable, high quality recording.

A sheet transport apparatus includes a device for generating an electrostatic attraction force for attracting a sheet member to a surface of a transport belt disposed close to another surface of the transport belt opposite to the surface that contacts the sheet member. The apparatus is arranged to reduce a drive load on the transport belt caused by the electrostatic attraction force. To achieve this effect, at least one of a surface of the electrostatic attraction force generating device contacting the transport belt and a surface of the transport belt contacting the electrostatic attraction force generating device is roughened.
