A glass containing 5 to 25 mass % of PO, 0 to 15 mass % of BO, 0 to 5 mass % of SiO+GeO, 21 to 50 mass % of BaO+SrO, 0 to 3 mass % of LiO+NaO+KO, and 35 to 65 mass % of NbO, not substantially containing PbO, satisfying NbO/(BaO+SrO)=0.85 to 2.20, having a dielectric constant of 15 or greater, a dielectric loss of 10.0&#xd7;10or less, and a resistivity of 1.0&#xd7;10&#x3a9;&#xb7;cm or more.

There are provided low expansion transparent glass-ceramics obtained by heat treating a base glass produced at a relatively low melting temperature of 1530&#xb0; C. or below. The glass-ceramics have an average linear thermal expansion coefficient within a range from +6&#xd7;10/&#xb0; C. to +35&#xd7;10/&#xb0; C., 80% transmittance wavelength (T) of 700 nm or below, internal transmittance of 75% or over at light wavelength of 1550 nm, heat resisting temperature of 800&#xb0; C. or over and Young's modulus of 90 GPa or over. The glass-ceramics comprise SiO, AlO, MgO, CaO, BaO, ZnO, LiO, TiOand ZrOand contain &#x3b2;-quartz or &#x3b2;-quartz solid solution as a predominant crystal phase. There are also provided optical waveguide elements and an arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) type planar lightwave circuit utilizing these glass-ceramics.

Low expansion transparent glass ceramics

There is provided a glass-ceramic composite electrolyte including a medium containing glass-ceramic powder impregnated with a non-aqueous electrolytic solution. There is also provided a lithium secondary cell having a positive electrode, a negative electrode and a separator in which the separator includes the above described composite electrolyte. The glass-ceramic powder consists of grains having an average grain diameter of 20 &mgr;m or below (calculated on the basis of volume), a maximum grain diameter of 44 &mgr;m or below and lithium ion conductivity of 1&times;10 S&middot;cm or over. The glass-ceramic composite electrolyte has thickness of 100 &mgr;m or below and lithium ion conductivity of 1&times;10 S&middot;cm or over.

A thermoelectric semiconductor material is used for thermoelectric conversion in a thermoelectric conversion device. The material comprises a double oxide having one of a normal spinel crystal structure and an inverse spinel crystal structure, the double oxide comprising a composition that is represented by MIn.sub.2 O.sub.4, wherein M represents a metal element that can be changed into a divalent ion.

Thermoelectric semiconductor material
