This invention provides a battery precursor for producing a battery through a cutting process, in which a large number of battery elements comprising positive active material layers, separators having electrolytes and negative active material layers are installed in parallel between a plate-like positive current collector plate and a negative current collector plate facing each other, and the respective battery elements are partitioned each other and sealed by insulators. According to this battery precursor, a battery having a voluntary shape can be obtained easily by cutting only.

A lead acid storage battery has a cell composed of a positive plate comprising a positive active material layer and a positive current collector plate, a negative plate comprising a negative active material layer and a negative current collector plate, a separator and a frame-shaped gasket. In the cell, the positive plate and the negative plate are laminated with the gasket put between them. The gasket is in contact with peripheral edges of the positive current collector plate and the negative current collector plate. The positive active material layer and the negative active material layer are located in a cell space surrounded by both of the plates and the gasket with the separator put between them.

Film type battery

An electrotherapeutic device for passing a DC electric current through a living organism by applying a voltage to the living organism includes a battery with an internal resistance which is high enough so that changes in the resistance value of the living organism can be disregarded. Excessive flow of current is avoided even when the resistance of the living organism fluctuates. The device is safe, easy to handle, and inexpensive. It is particularly suited for use with iontophoresis; a technology by which drugs are administered using electricity.

A novel process for the production of a separator for use in a cell to prevent the short-circuiting of positive active material and negative active material comprises irradiating a polyolefin film 150 .mu.m or less thick with ionizing radiation at a dose rate of 5.times.10.sup.4 -10.sup.7 rads/sec. to give a total dose of 1 Mrad or more, contacting the irradiated film with an aqueous solution of a terminally unsaturated monomer such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid and the like at a temperature of 10.degree. C.-60.degree. C. to thereby cause grafting of the monomer onto the polyolefin film before the grafted polymer film is treated with an aqueous alkaline solution to finally obtain the separator for use in a cell, which is substantially improved in that it shows low electrical resistance and is excellent both in its acid resistance and mechanical strength.

Process for production of separators for use in cells

There is disclosed a novel cell separator made of a grafted membrane comprising a polyethylene film which is graft-copolymerized with a monomer having an ion exchange group, characterized in that said membrane has an area which is not grafted at all or an area of low degree grafting. By making use of this membrane, a small size and thin cell having excellent performance as well as satisfactory mechanical strength can be produced at low cost with great advantages.

Method of producing a dimensionally stable battery separator

A battery separator composed of a composite sheet of film to which a monomer having a hydrophilic or electrolytic group is grafted is disclosed. Said film consists of a first polymeric layer containing a substance capable of catching a metal ion dissolved from a positive or negative active material and a second polymeric layer integrally bonded to either one or both sides of the first polymeric layer and which contains no such substance or contains it in a smaller amount that that contained in said first polymeric layer. Battery separator and method of producing the same

This invention relates to a plate wrapping machine for storage batteries. It comprises an embosser for embossing a flat microporous sheet pulled from a supply reel to obtain a storage battery separator, a plate projector for separating and projecting plates one by one out of a hopper, a separator supplier for supplying the above mentioned embossed separator so as to intersect rectangularly with the projected plate and a separator sealing means for sealing the side parts of the embossed separator folded into two to wrap the plate, and wherein the respective components are operatively connected with one another in an on-line operation. The present invention has an advantage that a storage battery plate can be wrapped with an embossed separator quickly at a high efficiency by saving labor so that the cost of the product may be reduced.

A process is, herein, disclosed for preparing a membrane used for prevention of short-circuiting between the anode and the cathode of a battery comprising contacting a polyethylene film with an aqueous solution of acrylic acid, water, ethylene dichloride and ferrous salt or cupric salt and irradiating with ionizing radiation to obtain a polyethylene film with acrylic acid molecules grafted uniformly thereon.
