A freely rotatable endless belt has a bottom face that is opposed, in the water, to an ultrasonic oscillator. A carbon fiber fabric is transferred from a supply roller to a hot roller while being given tension by means of a torque motor and a constant speed motor connected to the supply roller and the hot roller, respectively. The carbon fiber fabric moves in contact with the bottom face of the endless belt, whereby endless belt rotates in synchronism with the carbon fiber fabric. Two oblique movement correcting belts are so disposed as to be pressed against both side portions of the endless belt while gripping respective selvages of the carbon fiber fabric. Each of the two oblique movement correcting belts is connected to a variable speed motor via a uni-directional clutch that transmits a driving force only in the direction of transferring the carbon fiber fabric.

This invention is to provide a lightweight, inexpensive reflecting mirror. A reflecting layer is formed on the front surface of a carbon fiber-reinforced plastic substrate. An reflecting mirror includes a first substrate consisting of a carbon fiber-reinforced plastics, a reflecting layer formed on the front surface of the first substrate, a second substrate formed on the rear surface of the first substrate, an edge member formed at edges of the first and second substrates, and a foamed body filled in a space defined by the first and second substrates and the edge member. The second substrate and the edge member preferably consist of a carbon fiber-reinforced plastics.

The present invention provides a CFRP-made optical cylinder comprising, as the main CFRP layers, (a) CFRP layers containing a carbon fiber arranged in a direction substantially parallel to the cylinder axial direction and (b) CFRP layers containing a carbon fiber arranged in a direction making an angle of substantially.+-.(40.about.50) degree to the cylinder axial direction, in which cylinder at least 50% by weight of the carbon fiber arranged in a direction substantially parallel to the cylinder axial direction has a linear expansion coefficient of -1.times.10.sup.-6 /.degree.C. or less and at least 50% by weight of the carbon fiber arranged in a direction making all angle of substantially.+-.(40.about.50) degree to the cylinder axial direction has a linear expansion coefficient of -1.times.10.sup.-6 /.degree.C. or less, and which cylinder has a linear expansion coefficient of -0.5.times.10.sup.-6 /.degree.C. to 0.5.times.10.sup.-6 /.degree.C. in the axial direction. In the present optical cylinder, the influence by the change in atmospheric temperature is very small. Further, in the production of the present optical cylinder, it has no distortion when subjected to heating and subsequent cooling to room temperature for molding, because it is well balanced in rigidity and strength.

A tubular multilayer woven fabric composed of at least two layers of a plurality of axial yarns, a circumferential yarn arranged between each layer without being interlaced with the axial yarns, and an interlacing yarn interlacing the axial yarns in different layers of the axial yarn. This woven fabric can be manufactured by inserting a yarn into shedding spaces by moving a shuttle along a straight line, traversing in a lateral direction, moving back along another straight line, and further traversing in a lateral direction back to the original position.

The present invention provides a CFRP-made optical cylinder comprising (a) CFRP layers containing a carbon fiber arranged in a direction substantially parallel to the cylinder axial direction and (b) CFRP layers containing a carbon fiber arranged in a direction nearly orthogonal to the cylinder axial direction, in which cylinder the carbon fiber arranged in a direction substantially parallel to the cylinder axial direction has a minus thermal expansion coefficient and the cylinder axial direction has a thermal expansion coefficient of -0.5.times.10.sup.-6 /.degree.C. to 0.5.times.10.sup.-6 /.degree.C. In the present optical cylinder, a sharp image can be maintained without making the correction of the optical axis even when the atmospheric temperature changes largely.

A method and apparatus for weaving a thick fabric. The method comprises the steps of providing a plurality of vertically stacked layers of textile weave, and weaving a set of wefts into the layers of textile weave. This weaving step, in turn, includes the steps of, for each of the plurality of layers, (i) forming a warp shed from the textile weave of the layer, and (ii) inserting one of the wefts into the formed warp shed. This weaving step is repeated a multitude of times to form the thick fabric. Each of the layers of textile weave forms a cloth fell; and the method of this invention further includes the step of vertically moving the layers of textile weave to position the cloth fell of each of the layers at a standard pre-selected weft inserting position when one of the wefts is inserted into the warp shed formed in that layer.

A method and apparatus for feeding a weft to weave a carbon fiber fabric. A carbon fiber package is supported rotatably in such a manner that the axis of the shaft thereof is substantially perpendicular to the running direction of the carbon fiber. The package is rotated so as to deliver the carbon fiber of a prescribed length necessary for one shot weaving of the weft. The carbon fiber of the prescribed length is reserved in a reservoir under an adjusted constant tension before shooting the carbon fiber weft of the prescribed length.

A method of making a carpet tile in which a carpet fed from a carpet feed section, a thermoplastic backing composition layer, and a secondary backing fabric fed from a secondary backing fabric feed section are laminated to form a carpet belt material, and the carpet belt material is cooled and cut to size. In the aforesaid method, the carpet is passed through a roll guider, and the secondary backing fabric is passed through a cloth guider, and, if required, through an expander roll. In the aforesaid methods, the secondary backing fabric is further preheated.
