A data recording and reproducing apparatus has facilities for recording and reproducing, inputting and outputting, and editing data and can perform edits by itself. The data recording and reproducing apparatus records AV data inputted from an input port on HDDs by using a recorder and reproducer, and outputs data reproduced from HDDs by the recorder and reproducer through an output port. In an editor inputted is data inputted from outside and data reproduced by the recorder and reproducer. The editor performs edits on at least either of the data above by using a matrix switcher and an audio mixer provided therein. A special effector is utilized as necessary. The editor can output data obtained through editing processing to a switch.

A data recording and/or reproducing apparatus having actuating buttons or adjustment volumes which enable a wide variety of processing operations despite a limited operating space, and which is able to display levels of plural audio data or to display various other data on a limited display area without detracting from viewability. A prerecorded digital test signal is reproduced and written to a field memory which, during a normal playback mode, is used to store the digital video signal that may be reproduced. A loop, which is opened during the normal playback mode, includes DAC and ADC for circulating the digital test signal therethrough a number of times and is coupled to the field memory to receive the stored test signal. A detector detects changes in the test signal after having been circulated through the loop, and these changes are used to establish adjustment settings for adjusting the digital video signal during a playback mode.
