A rolling member fitted into a guide recess and capable of performing a wedge action on a collar of a rotary quill is held by an annular holder in such a manner that the longitudinal movement of the rolling member can be restricted and the outside of the annular holder is rotatably fitted with an annular outer frame for restricting the outward movement of the rolling member, thereby forming a clutch main body. A rolling member fitted into a guide recess and capable of performing a wedge action on a collar of a rotary quill is held by an annular holder in such a manner that the longitudinal movement of the rolling member can be restricted and the outside of the annular holder is rotatably fitted with an annular outer frame for restricting the outward movement of the rolling member, thereby forming a brake main body. By rotating the annular holder by use of a rotation operation member provided in the annular holder, the rolling member is controlled such that it can be restricted and held at an operative position allowing the wedge action or at a non-operative position prohibiting the wedge action, thereby switching the rotary quill to a reversal preventive position or to a reversal allowable position. Also, the brake main body is constructed as detachable one unit.

In a centrifugal force-operated brake device for a fishing reel, brake shoes (20) are slidably mounted on supporting rods (19) which are turned together with the spool. The brake shoes are brought into sliding contact with the inner cylindrical surface (15a) of a brake cylinder (15) by centrifugal force, thereby braking the spool. The supporting rods (19) are swingably supported by a supporting member (17), so that their angular position relative to the supporting member is changeable.

A reverse rotation preventing mechanism in a spinning reel for fishing is characterized in that a rotor is secured to a rotary quill, which is rotated by the turning of a handle in kinematic conjunction therewith; a reverse rotation prevention member having reverse rotation prevention engagement portions is rotatably supported concentrically to the quill; a reverse rotation prevention claw is supported by the body of the reel so as to be swingable, and can be engaged with one of engagement portions; and a roller-type one-way clutch is provided between the rotor and the reverse rotation prevention member. When the rotor is reversely rotated in such a direction as to wind a fishline, the clutch member connects kinematically the rotor to the reverse rotation prevention member.

A balancer is integrally and projectingly formed on a boss of a handle arm. The handle arm has a support shaft opposite from the balancer, a knob is rotatably supported on the support shaft. A portion of the handle arm around and in the vicinity of the boss is formed into a smooth surface, and an outer periphery of the balancer is also formed into a smooth surface. Thus, a fishline is prevented from tangling onto the balancer.

An arrangement for a reverse rotation preventive device for a fishing reel. A hollow engagement member, which is a part of a rotor, is non-rotatively fitted on a drive shaft having an oblong cross-section. A bearing and a hollow collar are simply fitted on the drive shaft. The hollow collar and the hollow engagement member are formed with engagement portions through which they are non-rotatively coupled together. A one-way clutch is arranged so that an outer race member is fixed to a main body and a roller is located between the collar and the outer race member to provide a reverse rotation preventive function when the drive shaft is rotated reversely. By coupling the collar, which is formed into a simple configuration and contacts with the roller, to the engagement member non-rotatively fitted on the drive shaft, it is possible to maintain the dimensional accuracy and high-performance of the rolling-type one-way clutch utilizing wedge action.

A handle folding device for a fishing reel having a handle arm for manual rotation and a handle shaft for transmitting the manual rotation to a spool. A handle arm is pivotably supported onto the handle shaft so as to be pivoted between an up-standing position and a folded position. The handle arm in the up-standing position is retained relative to the handle shaft by the engagement between a step portion of the handle shaft and a handle stopper pivotably mounted on the handle arm. The handle arm in the folded position is also retained relative to the handle shaft by the engagement between the handle stopper and a recess formed on the handle shaft. Since the handle arm can be surely retained in its folded position as well as in its up-standing position, many advantages are produced in carrying the fishing reel by a fisherman, accommodating the fishing reel within a case in a manufacturing line, and so on.
