A screen reflects projection light for display. The screen has a screen base designed to be wound and including a first surface (front surface) and a second surface (rear surface) on the side opposite to the front surface. The front surface contains a display area that has a reflection film on which the projection light is reflected. The screen further has a flexible protection member which is disposed on the portion of the rear surface corresponding to the outside of the display area in the width direction of the display area, and extends through substantially the full length of the display area in the winding direction of the display area. The front surface is positioned outside when the screen base is wound.

A method for manufacturing an array substrate includes forming a plurality of holes in a film shape substrate having thermal plasticity, in which the holes have a diameter of 0.25 times to 2 times a thickness of the substrate, and a pitch of 5 times to 40 times the diameter of the holes; and heating a molding member provided with a plurality of convex portions or concave portions in an array pattern, pressing the substrate provided with the plurality of holes, and transferring the plurality of convex portions or concave portions to the substrate.

A projector with a specially manufactured optical compensation element is disclosed. One method of manufacturing the optical compensation element temporarily attaches an inorganic substrate made of a birefringent inorganic material to a base member with a temporary bond, grinds/polishes the inorganic substrate, attaches a light transmissive support substrate to a surface of the inorganic substrate on the opposite side to the side of the base member, and separates the inorganic substrate with the light transmissive support substrate from the base member.

Method of manufacturing optical compensation element and projector

The invention provides a cutting step of a polarization beam separating material less susceptible to cutting position slipping. In particular, the present invention relates to a method for manufacturing a polarization beam splitter for splitting an incident beam into two types of linearly polarized beams. A laminate is constructed by gluing a plurality of substrates, at least some of which have a polarization beam separating film on one surface thereof. The planar laminate of the substrate is cut at a predetermined angle to the surface thereof to form a generally planar polarization beam splitter block in which a plurality of prisms are glued, each having a parallelogrammatic shape in cross section. A rectangular parallelepiped polarization beam splitter is thus formed by cutting away a prism portion having a generally trapezoidal shape in cross section from at least one end portion of the polarization beam splitter block. The width across the top surface of the generally trapezoidal form of the cross section of the cut portion is set to be larger than half the width of a toothed blade.

Method for manufacturing a polarization beam splitter

In an illumination optical system; a wavelength separating optical system; plural light modulation devices provided respectively so as to modulate the light in the plural wavelength regions according to a given image signal; a light synthesizing optical system for synthesizing the light modulated by the plural light modulation devices; a projection optical system for projecting the synthesized light emitted; and a reflecting mirror placed in the optical path. Light with a wavelength of approximately 425 nm is separated by the wavelength separating optical system and enters a corresponding light modulation device. The reflecting mirror has a reflectance of approximately 90% or more, for light in the wavelength region of approximately 435 nm or more, and a reflectance for light in the wavelength region of at least 425 nm&plusmn;5 nm, that is lower than the reflectance for the light in the wavelength region of approximately 435 nm or more.

To provide a polarization conversion element which makes it possible to achieve high production efficiency. A polarization conversion element in accordance with the present invention includes a plurality of transmissive members arranged along a predetermined direction, and a plurality of polarization separation films and a plurality of reflection films alternately disposed between the plurality of transmissive members. In each polarization separation film, a transmittance ratio for an ultraviolet light beam of a particular wavelength range which is incident on a surface of each polarization separation film at an angle of incidence of approximately 0 degrees is approximately 40% or more. Each reflection film may be formed so that its transmittance ratio for an ultraviolet light beam of a particular wavelength range which is incident on a surface of each reflection film at an angle of incidence of approximately zero degrees is approximately 40% or more.

Polarization separation element, polarization conversion element, and projector

A technique for improving properties of polarizing beam splitters and polarizing conversion elements, and a projection display apparatus having high light utilization efficiency using such polarizing beam splitters are provided. A polarizing beam splitter in accordance with the present invention includes a light transmissive substrate having a refractive index ranging from approximately 1.48 to 1.58, and a polarization separating film formed on the light transmissive substrate. The polarization separating film includes a multilayered structural section formed by alternately arranging MgF,layers and MgO layers. The polarization separating film in accordance with the present invention can improve the transmission property and the reflection property with respect to two types of polarized light. Also, by using the polarization separating film for a polarizing conversion element or a projection display apparatus, it is possible to provide a polarizing conversion element or a projection display apparatus having high light utilization efficiency.

Polarization beam splitter, polarization converter, and projector

A method of forming a color filter substrate having pixels of at least two different colors by use of a negative photoresist material of the last color deposited. The negative photoresist is coated over the pixels and the exposed surface of the substrate. The back of the substrate is then exposed to a light source at a wavelength blocked by the formed pixels so that any of the negative photoresist material directly on the transparent substrate is activated by the light from the light source and remaining material is removed.
