A process for making sticks of small diameter being highly stiff, difficult to break or crack and usable as a cotton swab, straw, 'sunokos', etc. is provided, which includes extruding a polypropylene resin having a crystallinity of 0.945 or more and a melt flow rate of 0.2 to 20 g/10 minutes and satisfying a relation between melt flow rate and Q value of y.gtoreq.2x+8 wherein y represents Q value and x represents melt flow rate and stretching this stick to 5 times or more the original length thereof.

Process for making small diameter sticks

A process is provided in which a plasticized resin is extruded from an extruding machine into an accumulator into which the resin is stored by an amount which exceeds the amount required for one resin molding operation. The stored resin, in operation, is fed through a flexible hose to a supply and measuring device, such as a gear pump, under controlled pressure conditions. The resin is measured by the supply and measuring device by regulating the flow rate of the resin and is then charged into the mold cavity in a measured amount. The clamping of the mold can be effected by a clamping force less than that required by a conventional press-molding machine.

A plasticized resin is extruded from an extruding machine into an accumulator into which the resin is stored by an amount exceeding the amount required for one resin molding operation. The stored resin, in operation, is fed through a flexible hose towards a gear pump under controlled pressure conditions. The resin is measured by the gear pump and the displacement and the rotational speed of the gear pump are controlled by a suitable controller such as microcomputer to exactly measure the plasticized resin to be charged into the mold cavity in a predetermined distributing mode. The clamping of the mold can be effected by a clamping force less than that required by a conventional press-molding machine.

A cellulosic filler for thermoplastic resins, which, when blended with thermoplastic resins followed by molding, can afford molded products free from deterioration in mechanical strength, stiffness, resistance to thermal deformation, etc., and a thermoplastic resin composition containing the same are provided, which cellulosic filler is a cellulosic filler heat-treated with glyoxal for thermoplastic resins, the quantity of glyoxal being preferably 0.5 to 12% by weight based on unreated cellulosic filler.

A polyolefin resin composition which is suitable mainly for affording superior processing properties of sheet and little in the variation of flowability at hot processing temperatures is provided. The composition comprises (A) a resin mixture comprising a polypropylene resin and a polyethylene resin, the respective percentages by weight of these resins in the mixture being specified, (B) a polyolefin resin modified with a polymerizable unsaturated carboxylic acid, its salt or its ester by graft polymerization and (C) finely divided vegetable fibers, the ratio of (A) to (B) and the content of (C) in the composition being both specified.
