The present invention relates to a liquid crystal composition for a light-scattering liquid crystal device shown in FIG.containing a polymerizable compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by the following general formula (1) as a first component and containing a compound having a negative dielectric anisotropy as a second component, a light-scattering liquid crystal device using the liquid crystal composition, and a smart window using the light-scattering liquid crystal device. A reverse mode type light-scattering liquid crystal device can have excellent transparency when no voltage is applied and a reduced driving voltage by the liquid crystal composition of the present invention.

The present invention relates to light-scattering liquid crystal devices suited for use in light control glass such as optical shutters and use in segment displays in, for example, clocks. A light-scattering liquid crystal device according to the present invention includes two substrates, of which at least one includes an electrode layerand at least one is transparent, and a light control layerheld between the substrates, the light control layercontaining a liquid crystal material and a polymer substance, wherein the light-scattering liquid crystal device includes, between the substrates and the light control layer, a thin film layerformed by subjecting a thermally curable compound containing a reactive group to thermal curing. According to the present invention, a light-scattering liquid crystal device having dramatically improved adhesion can be provided.

Light-scattering liquid crystal device

There is provided a liquid crystal display element. The liquid crystal layer contains a liquid crystal composition between the first substrate and the second substrate. The first common electrode contains a transparent conductive material on the first substrate. The second common electrode contains a transparent conductive material on the second substrate. The pixel electrode contains a transparent conductive material. Distances R between the pixel electrode and the common electrode is smaller than distance G between the first substrate and the second substrate. The common electrode is disposed closer to the first substrate than the pixel electrode over nearly the entire surface of the first substrate. The liquid crystal composition has negative dielectric anisotropy and contains one or two or more compounds selected from the group of compounds represented by General Formula (i), General Formula (ii), and General Formula (iii).

Liquid-crystal display element

[Problem] The purpose of the present invention is to provide a method for developing a large anchoring energy by simple processes. [Solution] There is provided a method for manufacturing a liquid crystal alignment film, comprising: a process (I) of mixing a solvent with a photoresponsive polymer to prepare a photoresponsive polymer solution; a process (II) of coating the photoresponsive polymer solution on a substrate, followed by drying at 50 to 100&#xb0; C. for 1 to 3 minutes and then drying at 120&#xb0; C. to 180&#xb0; C. for 5 to 75 minutes to form a coating film; and a process (III) of adjusting a temperature of the coating film while the coating film is irradiated with a light of 200 to 350 nm to 40&#xb0; C. to 100&#xb0; C.

Method for producing liquid crystal alignment film and liquid crystal display element using same

This invention provides an FFS type liquid crystal display containing one type or two or more types of compounds selected from the group of compounds represented by General Formula (i), General Formula (ii), and General Formula (iii) and one type or two or more types of compounds selected from compounds represented by General Formula (II). This display makes it possible to realize excellent display characteristics without deteriorating various liquid crystal display characteristics such as dielectric anisotropy, viscosity, nematic-phase maximum temperature, nematic-phase stability at low temperatures, or &#x3b3;and the display burn-in characteristics.

Liquid-crystal display

The liquid crystal display element uses a liquid crystal composition which has a negative value of dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x3b5;) and is designed to improve light transmittance adjusting an elastic constant, and a liquid crystal display including the liquid crystal display element. The liquid crystal display element uses a liquid crystal composition having a dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x3b5;) of less than &#x2212;1.5, in which a value of &#x393; of the liquid crystal composition is 0.3 or less, and the value of &#x393; is obtained from Equation (2) using measured values of a splay elastic constant (K) and a bend elastic constant (K) of the liquid crystal composition and a twist elastic constant (K) value obtained from Equation (1) using measured values of a threshold voltage (Vth), a bend elastic constant (K), vacuum permittivity (&#x3b5;), a cell gap (d), and a helical pitch (P). 

Liquid crystal display element and liquid crystal display

Provided is an LCD device having excellent high speed responsiveness. This LCD device contains a polymer or a copolymer in a liquid crystal composition sandwiched between two transparent substrates, at least one of which has an electrode, and the content of the polymer or the copolymer is 1% by mass or greater and less than 40% by mass of the total mass of the liquid crystal composition and the polymer or the copolymer. This LCD device can be applied to various operation modes such as TN, STN, ECB, VA, VA-TN, IPS, FFS, a &#x3c0; cell, OCB, and cholesteric liquid crystals.

There is provided a liquid crystal composition having the following properties without suffering reductions in refractive index anisotropy (&#x394;n) and nematic phase-isotropic liquid phase transition temperature (T): sufficiently low viscosity (&#x3b7;), sufficiently low rotational viscosity (&#x3b3;1), a large elastic constant (K), and a negative dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x3b5;) with a large absolute value. There is also provided a liquid crystal display device of, for example, a VA type that uses such a liquid crystal composition and that has a high response speed and excellent display quality with defective display being eliminated or reduced. In particular, a liquid crystal composition having a negative dielectric anisotropy is provided, the composition containing a first component that is at least one compound represented by General Formula (i) and a second component that is at least one compound selected from compounds represented by General Formula (L).

Nematic liquid crystal composition and liquid crystal display device using the same

There is provided a liquid crystal composition which enables a significant reduction in crystallization temperature as compared with addition of a homolog while having a similar skeleton structure, which has an excellent compatibility, and which enables an increase in the absolute value of negative dielectric anisotropy (&#x394;&#x2208;). The liquid crystal composition contains two or more compounds which each have two to four ring structures between two side chains. At least one of the ring structures is a 2,3-difluorobenzene skeleton. The two side chains are bonded to different ring structures. The positions of the 2,3-difluorobenzene skeletons are different from each other, and the number of the ring structures are the same as each other.

The liquid crystal light modulator includes a first substrate () and a second substrate () disposed between two polarizers, and a pair of electrode structures (). The substrates include homeotropic alignment films () and (), and at least one of the substrates has a function of aligning C-directors of liquid crystal molecules along one direction. The one direction forms an azimuth angle in the range of 35 to 55 degrees with the direction of the electric field generated by the pair of electrode structures (). A liquid crystal composition layer () contains a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition having a chiral smectic C phase or a liquid crystal composition that has an achiral smectic C phase and negative dielectric anisotropy. Light transmittance is modulated by the electric field generated by the electrode structures () changing the birefringence index of the liquid crystal composition layer ().

A liquid crystal composition in which deterioration of viscosity that is associated with an increase in &#x394;n and an increase in &#x394;&#x2208; is suppressed, and a liquid crystal display element having a markedly improved response speed by using the relevant liquid crystal composition. The liquid crystal composition has a large value of &#x394;n and negative &#x394;&#x2208;, and have large absolute values thereof. Also, the liquid crystal composition has low &#x3b7;, has excellent liquid crystal properties, and exhibits a liquid crystal phase that is stable in a wide temperature range. Furthermore, since the liquid crystal composition is chemically stable to heat, light, water and the like, the liquid crystal composition is capable of low voltage driving, and is practically useful and highly reliable.
