A vehicle includes a controller. The controller is configured to perform authentication of a portable device by communication with the portable device when startup of a system of the vehicle is instructed, when the system is off, or when the startup of the system of the vehicle is instructed and the system is off. The controller is configured to perform the startup of the system of the vehicle when the startup of the system of the vehicle is instructed, under a condition that the authentication of the portable device is successful. The controller is configured to perform reauthentication of the portable device when predetermined movement of the vehicle is detected after the startup of the system of the vehicle, and perform theft prevention processing when the reauthentication of the portable device fails.

A control apparatus for a vehicle provided with (a) a transmission and (b) a shifting device including (b-1) a shift actuator and (b-2) a shift lever. The shift actuator establishes one of shift ranges in the transmission such that the established one of the shift ranges corresponds to a selected one of shift-lever operating positions of the shift lever. When a switching request is made to request the transmission to be switched to an opposite-direction drive range that is for driving the vehicle in a direction opposite to a current running direction of the vehicle, during running of the vehicle with a speed being not lower than a given value, the control apparatus rejects the switching request. The control apparatus rejects the switching request, also during running of the vehicle with the running speed being lower than the given value, if the vehicle is running on a downhill road.

An electronic control unit is configured to when the operator does not pass through any one of traveling operation positions while the operator is operated from an initial position to an neutral operation position and then returned to the initial position, and when the operator is continuously held at the neutral operation position for a first predetermined time or longer, change a shift range of an automatic transmission to the neutral range, and when the operator passes through at least one of the traveling operation positions while the operator is operated from the initial position to the neutral operation position and then returned to the initial position, prohibit a change of the shift range to the neutral range even when the operator is continuously held at the neutral operation position for the first predetermined time or longer.

In a control apparatus for a vehicle that changes over a range of an automatic transmission by operating an electric shift actuator and that starts up an engine by operating a starter motor, for example, when an occupant of a vehicle that has carried out idling stop operates a shift lever, the operation of the shift actuator corresponding thereto is started, and the operation of the starter motor is started after the lapse of a predetermined period therefrom. Thus, while the starting responsiveness of the vehicle is enhanced, a fall in battery voltage is restrained from adversely affecting the operation of the shift actuator, and the occurrence of a shock and a decrease in driveability are suppressed as well.
