Organic polyphosphites are disclosed having in the molecule at least two phosphite ester groups, at least one of which is linked through oxygen to a phenylethylidene-substituted phenyl group and to a residue of a polyhydroxy compound which is a pentaerythritol residue or a residue of a phenol or alcohol having two to three hydroxyl groups separated from one another by at least three carbon atoms. Polymer stabilizer compositions comprising an organic polyphosphite as disclosed and a known polymer stabilizer, as well as synthetic resin stabilized with such stabilizer compositions, are also disclosed.

Phenylethylidene-substituted phenyl polyphosphites

An additive composition for improving the color stability of a vinyl chloride polymer stabilized with environmentally acceptable stabilizers comprises dehydroacetic acid or its Na, K., Li, Mg, Zn, Ba, Ca, Sn, or Sr salt and an organic phosphite having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a t-butyl or t-amyl group, R.sub.2 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group having one to five carbon atoms, R.sub.3 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, and each of R.sub.4 and R.sub.5 independently is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 5 to 20 carbon atoms, an aryl group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, or an ether-substituted group having 3 to about 50 carbon atoms and 1 to about 40 ether oxygen atoms.

Ortho-substituted aryl phosphite additive composition

A stabilizer composition is disclosed that enhances the resistance to deterioration upon heating of vinyl chloride polymers. The stabilizer composition comprises (A) a metal salt of a nitrogen-free monocarboxylic acid or a phenol and (B) a hydrogen phosphite ester of an ortho-phenylethylidene-substituted phenol. Vinyl chloride polymer compositions stabilized with the above disclosed stabilizer composition are also disclosed.

Ortho-substituted phenyl acid phosphite stabilizers for polyphenylene oxide resin compositions have the formula ##STR1## in which R.sub.1 is a t-butyl, t-amyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl group; R.sub.2 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 5 carbon atoms, a cyclohexyl group, or a phenyl group; R.sub.3 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; and R.sub.4 is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, an ether-alkyl group having 3 to about 70 carbon atoms and 1 to 30 ether groups, an aryl group having 6 to 18 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 5 to 14 carbon atoms, an aralkyl, alkaryl, or alkoxyaryl group having 7 to 19 carbon atoms, an ethoxylated aryl or alkaryl group having 8 to 78 carbon atoms and 1 to 30 ether groups, or a cycloalkylaryl group having 11 to 19 carbon atoms.

An additive composition for improving the color stability of a vinyl chloride polymer stabilized with environmentally acceptable stabilizers comprises a 1,3-diketone or 1,3-diketone Na, K., Li, Mg, Zn, Ba, Ca, Sn, or Sr salt and an organic phosphite having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a phenyl, cycloalkyl, t-butyl, or t-amyl group, R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are each a hydrogen atom or phenyl, cycloalkyl, or an alkyl group having one to five carbon atoms, R.sub.4 is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group, and each of R.sub.5 and R.sub.6 independently is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group having 1 to 18 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl group having 5 to 20 carbon atoms, an aryl group having 6 to 12 carbon atoms, or an ether-substituted group having 3 to 80 carbon atoms and 1 to about 40 ether oxygen atoms.

Ortho-substituted phenyl phosphite additive composition

New thiolcarbonate esters are disclosed, having a molecular weight from 400 to 5,000 perferably from 600 to 1500, and containing 3 to 20 percent by weight thiolcarbonate sulfur. The thiolcarbonate esters are represented by the formula ##STR1## in which R is a hydrogen atom, an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 1 to 22 carbon atoms, a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon group having 5 to 22 carbon atoms, or an aromatic hydrocarbon group having 6 to 22 carbon atoms; R' is an alkylene group having 1 to 3 carbon atoms; A is the residue of a polyhydroxy compound having 2 to 4 carbon atoms and 2 to 4 hydroxy groups, provided that the number of hydroxy groups does not exceed the number of carbon atoms; Q is ##STR2## Where X individually at each occurrence is a hydrogen atom or ##STR3## k has the same value at each occurrence and is zero or 1; m is a whole number from 1 to 3; n is a whole number from 0 to 2 and p is a number from 0 to 10. The thiolcarbonate esters are highly effective stabilizers for a variety of synthetic resins. Stabilizer compositions comprising a thiolcarbonate ester and a known polymer stabilizer, as well as synthetic resins stabilized with such stabilizer compositions, are also disclosed.
