For an in-cylinder direct injection spark ignition internal combustion engine including an intake port provided with a tumble control valve, a startup control method is presented. When a startup of the engine satisfies a predetermined cold start condition requiring a retard operation of the engine for catalyst warmup, a startup process is performed. The startup process includes: closing the tumble control valve; after the closing of the tumble control valve, starting to crank the engine; implementing fuel injection of the engine by a single-injection operation during a time period from an initial cycle of combustion of the engine to an event that the engine rises and reaches a predetermined rotation speed; after the event, shifting from the single-injection operation to a multiple-injection operation; and substantially simultaneously with the shifting to the multiple-injection operation, starting an ignition timing retard.

Startup control method for in-cylinder direct injection spark ignition internal combustion engine, and internal combustion engine system

An internal combustion engine is mounted for power generation in a series hybrid vehicle and has an exhaust system with an upstream-side catalytic converter and a downstream-side catalytic converter. After starting of the internal combustion engine, the operation of the internal combustion engine is continued, without stopping the internal combustion engine even when the power generation request ceases, until completion of the warm-up of both of the upstream-side catalytic converter and the downstream-side catalytic converter. The internal combustion engine is operated with ignition timing retardation during a first period from the starting of the internal combustion engine to the completion of the warm-up of the upstream-side catalytic converter. During a second period from the completion of the warm-up of the upstream-side catalytic converter to the completion of the warm-up of the downstream-side catalytic converter, the internal combustion engine is operated without ignition timing retardation.

The control device () operates to: calculate the ignition timing of each cylinder () of an engine () based on whether or not knocking is occurring; set, as a reference ignition timing, the ignition timing of any of the cylinders () for which the ignition timing is on the advanced angle side relative to the most retarded angle ignition timing on the most retarded angle side and on the retarded angle side relative to the most advanced angle ignition timing on the most advanced angle side; set an allowable timing difference range that is a range of an allowable timing difference with reference to the reference ignition timing; and when determining that the ignition timing of a cylinder () falls outside the allowable timing difference range, correct the ignition timing so that the timing difference with respect to the reference ignition timing falls within the allowable timing difference range.
