An object of the present invention is to provide a liquid crystal composition suitable for producing liquid crystal display elements which reduces the risk of the formation of droplet traces during production and allows a liquid crystal material to be ejected at a constant rate during an ODF process without deteriorating the properties of the liquid crystal display element, such as dielectric anisotropy, viscosity, nematic-phase upper-limit temperature, nematic-phase stability at a low temperature, and &#x3b3;, and the image sticking resistance of the display element, and a liquid crystal display element including the liquid crystal composition. Provided are a liquid crystal composition having a negative dielectric anisotropy, the liquid crystal composition including one or more compounds represented by General Formula (I), one or more compounds represented by General Formula (II), and the compound represented by Formula (IIIb-1) and a liquid crystal display element including the liquid crystal composition.

A liquid crystal composition containing a polymerizable compound of the present invention has excellent characteristics of being able to prepare a PSA type liquid crystal display element with no problem of depositing in a wide temperature range, having high polymerization speed, high liquid crystal alignment regulation force after polymerization, excellent display qualities with no display unevenness, and excellent display characteristics with no defects in display characteristics such as image sticking and is appropriate as a liquid crystal composition in a practical use. There is provided an FFS mode liquid crystal display device that uses a liquid crystal composition which has a negative dielectric anisotropy and can achieve good display properties by being used for FFS mode liquid crystal display devices without degrading the image sticking property of display devices and various properties of liquid crystal display devices, such as dielectric anisotropy, viscosity, nematic phase upper limit temperature, low-temperature nematic phase stability, and &#x3b3;. The present invention provides a method for producing a liquid crystal composition which mixes two or more liquid crystal compounds, namely, a method for producing a liquid crystal composition, including conducting agitation or ultrasonic irradiation of two or more liquid crystal compounds without applying external heat, wherein at least one of the liquid crystal compounds has a melting point higher than 40&#xb0; C., and a temperature at a start of the agitation or ultrasonic irradiation is not more than 40&#xb0; C. The production method of the present invention enables a highly reliable, high-quality liquid crystal composition to be produced without the necessity for large-scale equipment such as a pressure reduction apparatus or heating apparatus. Accordingly, this method is extremely practical for the production of liquid crystal compositions that require a high level of reliability.
