The purpose of the present invention is to appropriately control the rate of polymerization of a composition in which a thiol compound and an isocyanate compound are added to an episulfide compound and thereby provide an optical material which has high transparency. This composition for use as optical material comprises (a) an episulfide compound, (b) an isocyanate compound, (c) a thiol compound, and (d) a benzyl halide compound represented by formula (1): wherein: X is a halogen; L is selected from the group consisting of a hydrogen atom, a methyl group, a halogen, a mercaptomethyl group, and an isocyanate methyl group; and n is 1 or 2.

Composition for use as optical material

A preferred embodiment of the present invention can provide an optical material composition that includes an episulfide compound that is represented by formula (1) and a polymerizable compound that is different from the episulfide compound that is represented by formula (1). The optical material composition makes it possible to stably and inexpensively store the polymerizable compound and to achieve an optical material that has a favorable hue and that has favorable lightfastness and transparency. (In the formula, m is an integer from 0 to 4, and n is an integer from 0 to 2.)

One embodiment of the present invention can provide an optical material composition that includes a cyclic compound that is represented by formula (1) and an episulfide that is represented by formula (2). Another embodiment of the present invention can provide an optical material production method that includes a step wherein, with respect to the total amount of the optical material composition, 0.0001-10 mass % of a polymerization catalyst is added to the optical material composition and the optical material composition is polymerization cured. (In formula (2), m is an integer from 0 to 4, and n is an integer from 0 to 2.)

According to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, with an optical material compound including an episulfide compound represented by formula (1) and an episulfide compound represented by formula (2), it is possible to stably and inexpensively store the episulfide compound represented by formula (2) and also provide an optical material having excellent light resistance (in formula (1), m represents an integer from 0 to 4, and n represents an integer from 0 to 2) (in formula (2), m represents an integer from 0 to 4, and n represents an integer from 0 to 2).
