A laser projector includes a laser light source; a two-dimensional light modulator which modulates light from the laser light source; and a projection optical system which projects images onto a display plane by expanding the light modulated by the two-dimensional light modulator. Shift of a display position of the two-dimensional light modulation element and shift of the projection optical system are performed in synchronization with each other so that display positions of the images on the display plane are made substantially identical to each other. Thereby, speckle noise is sufficiently removed, and high-grade images are displayed.

A light source device is provided with a coherent light source for emitting the coherent light, and a pattern changer for changing an interference pattern of the coherent light on a surface of the illumination object. The pattern changer includes a photorefractive crystal which is arranged between the coherent light source and the illumination object and on an optical path of the coherent light and exhibits a photorefractive effect, and a changer for changing at least one of a light intensity distribution, a polarization direction, a wavelength and an intensity of coherent light incident on the photorefractive crystal. An LCD backlight has a light source that emits a laser light, a lens, a mirror, a rotary polygon mirror, a scanning lens and a return mirror constituting a transforming optical system that transforms the laser light from the light source to a linear light. A light guiding plate allows the linear light to enter and emits two-dimensional light in the horizontal direction. An emission end face of the light source is disposed in a rear face side of the light guiding plate so that a surface normal line thereof is in the horizontal direction or is inclined downward from the horizontal direction. The lens, mirror and scanning lens are disposed in the rear face side of the light guiding plate, so that surface normal lines of the light transmission surface and light reflection surface thereof are all in the horizontal direction or are inclined downward from the horizontal direction.

Liquid crystal display backlight and liquid crystal display device using same

A light source device with high use efficiency is provided. By using a laser light source of a single polarization, uniformization of light quantity and uniformization of polarization are simultaneously realized, in a two-dimensional planar illumination utilizing reflection and collimating. Thus, it is possible to realize the two-dimensional planar illumination with polarization aligned, and therefore the use efficiency of light can be significantly improved, when combined with switching utilizing the polarization of a liquid crystal panel, etc.

Liquid crystal display apparatus

A 2D image display apparatus using a laser light source. By controlling the timing of a scan by a beam scan portion in response to the characteristic of a laser light source and by setting a light emitting time of the laser light source to an integral multiple of a scan cycle of the beam scan portion, it is possible to illuminate a spatial light modulator homogeneously with a laser beam. It is thus possible to display an image at high accuracy without causing a bright line, irregularities in brightness, and contrast deterioration.
