The invention provides a drive device for electric vehicles which is small-sized, improved in heat radiating characteristics and adapted for use with a drive wheel of reduced diameter, and an electric wheelchair comprising the drive device. The drive device is provided on the inner periphery of each of left and right drive wheels (), () of the electric vehicle and comprises a casing () supported at one end thereof by an axle () on the electric vehicle, a motor () housed in the casing () and having a rotating shaft () aligned with the axle (), and a housing () rotatably fitted around the casing () and rotatable by the rotation of the motor (). The drive wheel () is provided around the outer periphery of the housing () and rotatable therewith.

A hub unit for use in electrically assisted bicycles has an improved effect to radiate heat from a stator. A hub () has inner teeth () meshable with planetary gears () and a fixing support shaft () projecting from opposite ends of the hub and provided fixedly relative to a motor housing (). The motor housing () has no cylindrical wall () covering the outer peripheral surface of the stator () but leaves the stator outer peripheral surface exposed to effectively release the heat generated by the windings of the stator.

Wheelchair

The control system of the present disclosure is particularly designed for use in the bicycle which is so designed as to change gears upon shifting of a chain guiding mechanism. The control system includes a motor driven reel, a flexible wire connected between the reel and the chain guiding mechanism and a switch arrangement for controlling the rotation of the reel. Upon turning on of the switch arrangement, the motor is rotated by a predetermined amount to perform a suitable shifting operation of the chain to engage with a required gear.
