In a content delivery system, a gatekeeping apparatus is connected to a network. Prior to the transmission of a request message to a content server, a user terminal transmits an enquiry message to the gatekeeping apparatus. In response, the gatekeeping apparatus makes a decision as to whether or not a content can be retrieved from the content server and performs control on the transmission of the request message according to the decision. If the decision indicates that a content can be retrieved, the user terminal transmits the request message to the content server. In a preferred embodiment, the gatekeeping apparatus makes comparison between user's preference data and server's policy data and determines whether the requested content can be retrieved from the server. A cache memory may be provided in the user terminal or gatekeeping apparatus to store past decisions regarding requested contents.

A retrieval system includes a retrieval server for providing retrieval service and a retrieval device accessible through a transmission medium by the retrieval server. A location information conversion device which can ensure privacy protection of a search object. Upon receiving a request with a designated accuracy from an input/output section, a location information generating section acquires location information from a location measurement section and supplies the location information to an accuracy adjustment section, together with the designated accuracy. The accuracy adjustment section converts the location information into location information of an accuracy equal to or lower than the designated accuracy and returns the resulting location information to the location information generating section. The location information generating section sends the location information whose accuracy has been converted to the requesting party via an input/output section. In a local area network, at least one host terminal has an application program and operates as a source host and other host terminals operate as destination hosts. Each host terminal executes a file management program. The cooperative work support system of the present invention has at least a first terminal and a second terminal in a communication network, wherein each terminal comprises: a file system for storing a shared file; a file transmitter for transmitting the shared file between the first terminal and the second terminal; and a sharable file list manager for registering shared file information into a sharable file list.
