A display apparatus is capable of adapting sufficiently to an increase in the display frequency even when using an optical modulation element which has a fairly low response speed and can rewrite an image at a high speed. The display apparatus separately performs mapping of display data for an optical modulation element of each pixel and application of gradation information. The display apparatus divides a display period of one frame into a plurality of sub-frames, controls the input value for the optical modulation element independently per each sub-frame in the plurality of sub-frames, and displays an image with a gradation display using the optical modulation element.

A reflective liquid crystal display apparatus with pixels includes a first electrode substrate, a second electrode substrate and a liquid crystal layer. The first electrode substrate includes a polymer layer having plural protrusions or depressions arranged randomly formed on a glass substrate, and a reflective layer, color filters, transparent electrodes, and an alignment layer formed and laminated sequentially on the polymer layer. The second electrode substrate, includes transparent electrodes and an alignment layer formed and laminated on a glass substrate, and arranged so that the alignment layer faces the alignment layer on the first electrode substrate. The liquid crystal layer is formed by filling a liquid crystal composition into an interval between the first and second electrode substrates. Portions of the reflective layer corresponding to the portions of each pixel other than apertures of each pixel are colored black.

Reflective color liquid crystal display apparatus

A reflection type liquid crystal display apparatus can avoid degradation of a reflection surface or an electrode terminal, provide a multiple color display with high color purity, and reduce fluctuation of voltage due to loss of a drive voltage or capacitive coupling, even when a color filter is provided on a substrate on the side of a reflection plate, thereby to realize a bright display having a high contrast. The reflection type liquid crystal display apparatus has a pair of substrates, a pair of orientation films disposed between the pair of substrates, a liquid crystal layer disposed between the pair of orientation films, a plurality of electrodes disposed respectively opposing the substrates and the orientation films, a reflection layer disposed between a plurality of the electrodes and the substrates within a space defined between one of the substrates and one of the orientation films, and at least one or more thin films having an insulating property arranged between the plurality of electrodes and the reflection layer.

Reflection type liquid crystal display apparatus with insulating film between electrodes and reflection layer

A liquid crystal display device includes two electrode substrates and a liquid crystal layer laid between these substrates. One electrode is composed of a glass substrate with a plastics layer having plural convex portions or convex and concave portions randomly formed thereon and a lamination of a reflector, an insulating and flatting layer, a transparent electrode, and alignment layer formed on the plastics layer. The other electrode substrate is composed of a glass substrate and a lamination of a transparent electrode and alignment layer formed on the glass substrate. Both of the electrode substrates are located in a manner to allow the alignment layer of them to be opposed to each other.

Method of manufacturing reflective liquid crystal display device

A reflective color liquid crystal display apparatus, which can obtain bright images with a contrast in when viewed from any direction, is provided at a low cost. The reflective color liquid crystal display apparatus has an inside reflector and is able to produce bright images with a high contrast because unnecessary reflecting light from non-aperture portions can be decreased, and its aperture ratio can be determined approximately only by intervals of the reflective layer and intervals between the transparent electrodes. This can be accomplished by removing a reflective layer corresponding to black a matrix layer, adding a black matrix function to a polymer layer having protrusions and depressions under the reflective layer, and making a composition of its element so that a black matrix layer is not formed on the reflective layer, but only color filters are formed.

An improved liquid crystal display apparatus for low power consumption is provided, within each of the regions surrounded by a plurality of scanning electrodes and a plurality of signal electrodes, with a display data holding circuit connected to the corresponding scanning electrodes and signal electrodes, for fetching and storing a display data from the signal electrode in response to a scanning signal; a switching device connected to the display data holding circuit, its switching operation being controlled by the holding circuit; and a display electrode connected to the switching device.

Liquid crystal display apparatus

Disclosed is an improvement in a thin-film pattern manufacturing method which includes the steps of providing a thin film on a substrate, forming a mask having a desired pattern on the thin film, and patterning the thin film by removing an exposed portion of the thin film by etching. According to the improvement, the mask is manufactured by forming a layer of an organic resin on the thin film on the substrate and by forming the organic resin layer in the desired pattern by a mechanical forming member. In another embodiment, the organic resin is directly formed or moulded on the thin film by a forming or moulding member.

Method of manufacturing a thin-film pattern on a substrate

The liquid crystal cell (30) for the optical change-over switch comprises a pair of transparent substrates (1), a pair of transparent flat electrodes (2) provided on the respective opposing surfaces of the substrates, orientation control films (3) provided on the flat electrodes (2), two pair of comb shaped electrodes (33) respectively provided on the orientation control films (3), and a ferroelectric liquid crystal layer (4) confined between the substrates (1). The optical incidence plane (31) to the cell (30) is so selected that the plane (31) is away from the helical axes (9) of the ferroelectric liquid crystal in the cell (30) in the order of somewhat greater than the tilt angle (.theta..sub.t) of the ferroelectric liquid crystal. The pair of flat electrodes (2) generate a first electric field (37a) perpendicular to the layer (32) and orient the long axes of the ferroelectric liquid crystal molecules into a first orientation (35a') parallel to the layer (32 ) to induce a first refractive index which causes simultaneous reflection of unpolarized light beam (7+8) with a predetermined incidence angle (.theta.). The two pair of comb shaped electrodes (33) generate a second electric field (37b') parallel to the layer and perpendicular to the helical axes (9) and orient the long axes of the molecules into a second orientation (35b') not in parallel to the layer (32) to induce a second refractive index which causes simultaneous transmission of the unpolarized light beam (7+8) with the predetermined incidence angle (.theta.).
