An exhaust cleaning filter has an exhaust gas inflow passage and an exhaust gas outflow passage disposed in alternating fashion; and a porous partition wall for setting the exhaust gas inflow and outflow passages at a distance from each other. A small pore region is sectioned off on the upstream side and a large pore region is sectioned off on the downstream side of the partition wall. The average pore diameter of the partition wall in the large pore region is greater than in the small pore region, and is set so that ash contained in the exhaust gas is able to pass through the partition wall. The exhaust purification filter has a promoting member for promoting the passing of exhaust gas that has flowed into the exhaust gas inflow passage, through the partition wall in the small pore region, and promoting inflow into the exhaust gas outflow passage.

An estimated trapped amount (PM) that is an estimated value of an amount of particulate matter that is trapped in a particulate filter arranged in an engine exhaust passage is calculated based on an engine operating state, and PM removal control is performed when the estimated trapped amount exceeds an upper limit amount. Reference temperature increase control is performed to remove the particulate matter from the particulate filter, and an actual temperature that is the temperature of the particulate filter while the reference temperature increase control is being performed is detected. A reference temperature that is the temperature of the particulate filter when it is assumed that the reference temperature increase control has been performed when the amount of particulate matter trapped in the particulate filter is a reference initial trapped amount is stored in advance. The estimated trapped amount is corrected based on the actual temperature and the reference temperature.

Exhaust gas purification apparatus for internal combustion engine

An object is to provide technology that enables an NOx catalyst to exercise its NOx reduction capability satisfactorily at any flow speed of the exhaust gas flowing into the NOx catalyst. An exhaust gas purification apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes a selective catalytic reduction NOx catalyst including at least a first catalyst layer having capability of reducing NOx and a second catalyst layer having oxidation capability and arranged closer to a catalyst substrate than the first catalyst layer. The apparatus has a supply valve for adding a specific addition quantity of reducing agent for reducing NOx to inflowing exhaust gas flowing into the selective catalytic reduction NOx catalyst. The apparatus further has a controller that is configured to control addition of the reducing agent by the supply valve based on the flow speed of the inflowing exhaust gas in such a way that the concentration of the reducing agent in a reducing agent atmosphere formed in the inflowing exhaust gas in a reducing agent addition period becomes equal to a specific concentration that is determined based on the flow speed of the inflowing exhaust gas and at which the reducing agent is assumed not to reach the second catalyst layer, when the temperature of the selective catalytic reduction NOx catalyst exceeds a specific temperature at which reduction of NOx by the first catalyst layer is carried out.

Micropore zones ZMI are defined at upstream sides of partition wallsof a particulate filter and macropore zones ZMA are defined at downstream sides of partition walls. The pore size of the partition walls at the micropore zones is set so that the particulate matter and the ash can be trapped by the partition walls at the micropore zones, while the pore size of the partition walls at the macropore zones is set so that the ash can pass through the partition walls at the macropore zones. When a quantity of trapped particulate matter is smaller than a limit quantity, control for increasing gas which temporarily increases the flow rate of the gas which flows into the particulate filter in order to remove the ash from the particulate filter, is performed.

An exhaust gas purification filter that is suitable for arrangement in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine and for collecting particulate matter contained in exhaust gas, comprises: exhaust gas inflow passages and exhaust gas outflow passages that are arranged alternately; and porous partitions that separate the exhaust gas inflow passages and the exhaust gas outflow passages from each other. A particulate filter arranged in an engine exhaust passage is provided with alternately arranged exhaust gas inflow and outflow passages and porous partition walls separating these passages from each other. In each partition wall, a coated zone where a coated layer with an average pore size smaller than that of a partition wall substrate is used to cover the substrate surface and a non-coated zone downstream of the coated zone where the substrate surface is not covered by the coated layer are defined, and the ash in the exhaust gas can pass through the partition wall in the non-coated zone. The quantity of particulate matter trapped at the non-coated zones is calculated, and PM removal control for removing particulate matter from the particulate filter is performed when it is judged that the quantity of trapped particulate matter is greater than an allowable upper limit amount.

An exhaust gas purification apparatus of an internal combustion engine includes: a reducing agent passage that connects a tank and an injection valve; a heater that heats up a hydrolysis catalyst that is provided in the reducing agent passage; and a controller comprising at least one processor configured to control a pump so that a reducing agent located further toward a side of the injection valve than the hydrolysis catalyst flows toward a side of the hydrolysis catalyst after completion of injection of a reducing agent in a state where the hydrolysis catalyst is at a temperature lower than the hydrolysis temperature and before start of injection of a reducing agent in a state where the hydrolysis catalyst is at a temperature equal to or higher than the hydrolysis temperature.

The present invention is intended to provide a technique which serves to suppress unburnt HC from being discharged to a downstream side, when fuel is injected from a fuel supply valve for removing clogging thereof. The present invention is provided with a fuel supply valve that supplies fuel to an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine, and an ignition unit that ignites the fuel supplied from the fuel supply valve, wherein in cases where there is a possibility that clogging may occur in an injection hole of the fuel supply valve, fuel for removal of clogging is injected from the fuel supply valve. An amount of the fuel to be injected from the fuel supply valve for removing clogging thereof is an amount of fuel which is able to be combusted by being ignited by means of the ignition unit.
