In an intake system for an engine incorporated with a resonance chamber (), a variable communication unit () for controlling the communication between an intake passage with the resonance chamber comprises an outer tube () having an open axial end () and an opening () defined in a circumferential wall thereof for communication with the resonance chamber and an inner tube () rotatably and coaxially received in the outer tube, the inner tube being provided with a communication inlet port () at an axial end on a same side as the axial end of the outer tube and an opening () in a circumferential wall thereof for defining a communication outlet port () jointly with the opening in the outer circumferential wall of the outer tube. The openings of the inner tube and outer tube are configured such that at least one of a distance (L) between the inlet and outlet ports of the communication passage and an opening area (S) of the communication outlet port changes in relation with a relative rotational angle between the inner tube and outer tube. Thereby, the intake system can be formed as a highly compact unit and requires little power to operate.

Intake system including a resonance chamber

In an engine crankcase ventilation system, a blowby gas passage and a fresh air passage are defined between adjoining crankcase members so as to extend in parallel with a crankshaft axial line along either side of a lower part of said crankcase assembly. Because the crankcase is configured to receive the rotating crankshaft provided with counterweights, it necessarily has a circular cross section. Therefore, this arrangement allows effective utilization of the available space. Thus, a cavity of a required volume for effective oil separation and pressure pulsation damping can be formed in the engine main body without increasing the number of components parts, and without complicating or increasing the size of the overall structure.

Engine crankcase ventilation system including a blowby gas passage defined between crankcase members

A V-type multi-cylinder internal combustion engine having a high volumetric efficiency and a high output torque is provided. Ignitions in right and left banks occur alternately and at equal intervals. A suction manifold shaped symmetrically in respect of right and left is disposed between the right and left banks. The suction manifold comprises right and left throttle base, a suction manifold upper formed with right and left suction passages communicating with respective suction ports in the left and right banks and arranged one by one alternately, right and left first chambers formed at contact surface portions between the throttle bases and the suction manifold upper, a suction manifold lower having right and left chambers. The right and left first chambers and the right and left second chambers always communicate with each other, respectively. Right and left second suction passages for connecting the right and left second chambers with the respective suction ports through the right and left first suction passages are formed around the right and left second chambers. The suction manifold is fixed on right and left cylinder heads by attaching the suction manifold upper to the cylinder heads.

V-type multi-cylinder internal combustion engine

An expandable chamber functioning as an expandable silencer, an air cleaner chamber functioning as an expandable silencer and a resonator chamber functioning as a resonant silencer are integrally formed in a main body of an intake silencer device. The air cleaner chamber and the resonator chamber communicate with each other through a communicating portion. A first intake duct is provided with one end extending into the expandable chamber and with the other end communicating with the atmosphere. A second intake duct is provided with one end extending into the expandable chamber opposed to one end of the first intake duct and with the other end extending into the air cleaner chamber. A third intake duct is provided with one end extending into the air cleaner chamber and connected to an air filter element. Thus, an intake silencer device has a high silencing effect, while being compact, and in which the rising of the temperature of an intake air and an increase in resistance to the flow of the intake air can be prevented.
